On the 1911 census the childrens' surnames are all Bone but actually some of them are Malyons. Also Annie says that they have been married 24 years and had 8 children all still living.

that's not my annie she married Benjamin malyon and only had 4 children she split up with him and lived with another man she changed her name my aunt said was not sure if it was bone

looking at the 1911 census posted by austinQ I now belive that is annie malyon as she is with my granddad Benjamin and her other son john and annie her daughter married to westover but will never know why annie westover called herself tilly Hopkins
very strange

Actually some of the children on the 1911 census that have the surname Bone were baptised as children of Benjamin & Annie Malyon.

Malyon- I think you're getting confused.

Annie L Malyon (Westover) didn't call herself Tilly Hopkins.

Tilly was a different person- Tilly was Matilda Elizabeth Bone (she's on the 1911 census with Annie).

She was born in 1896 and married Christopher J Hopkins.

Tilly is often a shortened version of Matilda.

Incidentally if they had the same mother they would be half brothers not step brothers.

sorry yes half brothers Benjamin malyon born 1861 their mother was maria her second marriage was to john malyon not sure if the Benjamin malyon who was witness to the marriage of matilda and Christopher was the father or his son as both called Benjamin

I am not sure myself but Richard malyon was born 1853 before john and maria got togeather I do not know the mother's name for Richard was trying to find a marriage for john there was also a son john malyon born 1951

If the 1861 marriage of John Malyon and Maria Hopkins(nee Saunders) is the correct one, then these are Richard and John's births:
