Welcome to the boards, Annette.

It's unlikely that Albert will be looking here for replies after so long.

You can try contacting him by clicking on his name at the top of one of his posts, and sending him a private message.
GR will notify him that there's a message from you in the system.

He may (or may not, for many possible reasons) be able to receive it and reply by email.

Hi Dea
I did not mean for you to do all that, but many thanks any way, all I wanted was the bit about Frederick, and thought you could cut and past it, but as usual I was wrong.
I can't thank you enough for all that work you did on it, do you live in the Barnsley area?

Hi Again Dea
Very interesting article on the workhouse and how it was run, and yes the job of porter was important from the reading, now you also said that you read an artical in the Barnsley Chronical of 3rd of Sept 1870 about Frederick being elected to the post, I tried to find that Paper to read about him, but had no luck any chance you could send me any thing on that please, that's if you can, thanks

Hi Chris Ho
Thanks for all that information on Frederick Etherington, it now firms up what I had on him and his father John Etherington, and of course Frederick was not on that that 1841 census? as he was not born till Nov 1841 which has now been confirmed, so again many thanks

It might interest you to know that the Institution where Frederick was working in 1871 was the Barnsley Union Workhouse.

I was intrigued as to how a 'humble porter' (who was someone I think of as 'fetching and carrying') should have become only one year later a County Court Officer so I looked further and found a mention in the Barnsley Chronicle, 3rd Sept., 1870 of him being 'elected' to the post .......

It would seem that the position of Porter at the Workhouse was a role of some importance, details of which can be seen below:

OOOps - I was hoping to copy and paste the details but the site won't let me :-(
However, you can read them for yourself here:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/admin/index.shtml

The info re 'Porter' is about 3/4 way down the page.

Albert ................

I wasn't suggesting that one of the two Fredericks with registrations in 1842 was yours ................ I had seen the baptism and knew it couldn't be.

I was showing how the family tree referred to by Malyon might have got it wrong!

Mind you .................. it would not be unknown for someone to be born in the "wrong" place, because the mother was away from home

Nor would it be unknown for a child to be registered months or even years later than actual date of birth!

Albert

Albert Report 12 Oct 2016 22:12

Hi Sylvia and Maylon
I think I had 1842 in my tree but since doing this research last month, I have now changed it to Born Nov 1st 1841 & Bapt: Dec 19 1841, which is what is on the bapt: certificate and makes sense, so no birth certificate but I think these dates are the most accurate, so i will close this query, and many thanks to you all

rootgatherer Report 12 Oct 2016 22:12

Malyon, the tree on Familysearch may have taken his year of birth as calculated from his age given on census records. If he was born November 1841, he would show as 9 years old on the 1851 census as he would not yet have had his tenth birthday.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Oct 2016 20:42

Al ...........

just one thing re his birth date ................

I think if the Vicar noted day and month in the Parish Register but without a year, then it can be assumed that the child was born in the year that s/he was baptized ........

so the assumption here would be that he was born 1 Nov 1841

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Oct 2016 20:40

Malyon .....

that tree is probably a result of inefficient research (for want of a ruder word!) ...........

There are two Frederick Etheringtons with births registered in 1842, one in London and one in Sussex

Assumption made!!

tree on family search says Frederick born 1842 so the one you mention could not have been baptised in 1841
