Stuart...Re AustinQ' post 24 Sept.17.20 Re Rental of Balblair House...

This is something I found from 1919....

The elder, Henry Charles Hynman Allanby (1853-1935), received Kenwick Hall, but seems to have run out of money during the Agricultural Depression of the 1880s and sold it to his brother-in-law, Thomas Garfit. He subsequently lived in Argyllshire and in 1919 bought Balblair, a small house on the outskirts of Nairn in north-east Scotland, where his descendants still live.

Maybe this was where John was born .

Stuart Report 12 Oct 2016 12:58

drew a blank with the highland archive search I am afraid of the poorhouse around the parishes closest to Nairn for Jessie, their experts think my only chance is to find her on scotlandspeople born 1899-1900 under possible name janet or less likely jane/jean with mother mary, their guess hunch is that she was probably closer to Nairn than inverness when she had son john in 1926 any ideas would be great thanks

Stuart Report 30 Sep 2016 07:54

on johns birth cert it only says balblair house kay maybe she was there long before he was born? highland archive people reckon there might be a record of her when she applied for entry ,I have sent my details off because its within 100yrs am hopeful as are they ,poorhouse records of this period were destroyed so we will have to see regards stuart its a parish council search they are doing

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Sep 2016 07:03

ArgyllGran Report 29 Sep 2016 17:25

On page 1 Stuart said that John was born at Balblair House.

Ness Lane doesn't seem to feature in the 1901 census.
There are Ness Walk, Ness Place, Ness Square, Ness Bank, Ness Side, but no Ness Lane.

There are four different M*Donald households in Haugh road, but none with a David.

This is the only David M*Donald listed who might be the one born 1901 (possibly the third birth above, with grandfather's name as middle name?):

David MacDonald
in the 1901 Scotland Census
Name: David MacDonald
Age: 1
Estimated birth year: abt 1900
Relationship: Son
Father's name: John MacDonald
Mother's name: Isabella MacDonald
Gender: Male
Where born: Inverness
Registration Number: 98
Registration district: Inverness
Civil Parish: Inverness
Town: Inverness
County: Inverness
Address: 2 Celt St
ED: 16
Household schedule number: 144
LINE: 25
Roll: CSSCT1901_29
Household Members:
Name Age
John MacDonald 31
Isabella MacDonald 26
David MacDonald 1
Alexander Cameron 58 - father-in-law
Jessie Maclean 70 - aunt

I think David's a red herring, and can be ignored.

Three possible births to maybe match that, on ScotlandsPeople, if you want to buy credits to see the details of address, parents' names, etc:

MACDONALD

MACDONALD

DAVID FORBES

098/ 42

MCDONALD

DAVID ALEXANDER

[The new website copy/pastes results as above, not in a nice neat line as before!]

Kay????

Kay???? Report 29 Sep 2016 10:59

The 1901census in Scotland was taken in April.
so a 1901 birth the age would be 1 month or 1 if 1900 birth.

Yes, that looks more likely, Alviegal.. But as you say - it doesn't solve the puzzle!

Stuart

Stuart Report 28 Sep 2016 20:05

Yes sorry I won't be able to go to the archive centre myself anytime soon as I live in the south West of England

Yes, fingers crossed for you Stuart. I have been to the Archives in Inverness a few times and found poor relief records for my ggrandfather and other family members which had a lot of information on them.

The members of staff are extremely helpful.

AG I wonder if this is the family of the Jessie that you have found. Still no help though!

Good thinking, Stuart.

If your contact at the Highland Archive Centre can find a record of Jessie, that could be very helpful.
Fingers crossed!
