Not sure at the moment- still thinking.

Just want to get this down for myself:

From Valuation Rolls: Inverness

1920: 2 Ness Place
Peter MacGillivray (Occ: Labourer)
James Macdonald (Occ: Labourer)

(Interestingly there is this photo labelled Miss Macgillivray, 2 Ness Place (no date): http://www.scottishhighlanderphotoarchive.co.uk/imageDetail.aspx?ID=6010)

1925: 2 Ness Place
David Macdonald (Occ: Fitter)
James Macdonald (Occ: Labourer)

1930: 2 Ness Place
David Macdonald (Occ: Fitter)
Miss Mary Macdonald

You could really do with someone who would be willing to check the historical electoral registers.

There were no Macdonalds listed at 2 Ness place in 1915 (so it's doubtful they'd be there in 1911).

However, there was a Catherine Macdonald at 1 Ness Place in 1915- but unsure whether this is connected yet.

Miss Macdonald is also at 1 Ness Place in 1911/ 1912 according to the post office directory (with Mrs Mackintosh & Mrs Margaret Frazer):
http://digital.nls.uk/directories/browse/pageturner.cfm?id=85110571

There is also reference to a David Macdonald & Miss Macdonald at 2 Ness Place in 1931 & 1941 directory:

1931
Macdonald, David, labourer, 2 Ness place, Haugh rd
Macdonald, Miss, 2 Ness place, Haugh road

1941 & 1942
Macdonald, D., waiter, 2 Ness place, Haugh road
Macdonald, Miss,, 2 Ness place, Haugh road

AustinQ Report 14 Oct 2016 14:08

Just looking at the valuation rolls and Street directories again and noticed that in 1930 there is also a Farquhar Macdonald at number 4 Ness Place.

The 1941 directory has these:

1 Ness Place:

NESS PLACE (off Haugh Road).

1 Ness Place
Mrs Dawson
David Macdonald. labourer

2 Ness Place
Miss Macdonald
D. Macdonald, waiter

3 Ness Place
Alexander Calder

4 Ness Place
Farquhar Macdonald, moulder
-----------------------------------------

Same houses in 1931:

WEST SIDE.
Ness Place —

1 Ness Place:
Mrs Margaret Fraser
Donald Fraser, jeweller
Duncan Maclennan, mason

2 Ness Place:
Miss Macdonald
David Macdonald, labourer

3 Ness Place:
Alexander Calder

4 Ness Place:
Farquhar Macdonald, moulder

No idea if these other Macdonald's are related, but given that there are only 8 houses in Ness Place, I would think they could be.

I am still working on it slowly!

Are there any more ideas on this post Please regards stuart

ArgyllGran Report 19 Oct 2016 14:44

Sorry, Stuart - no! I think we've exhausted the possibilities.

Only the unhelpful thought that there's no particular reason to think that the different Macdonalds in Ness Place, as posted above by AustinQ, are necessarily related.

Macdonald is an extremely common surname in Scotland.

AustinQ Report 19 Oct 2016 16:13

Stuart, you could try contacting the National Library of Scotland- they hold electoral registers for all regions from 1946. As you have a name and address they might be able to help.

http://www.nls.uk/family-history/contact

I believe the electoral registers will give names, as opposed to Miss or just initials as in the valuation rolls. If we knew how long she was at Ness Place we might be able to trace a death.

Stuart Report 19 Oct 2016 17:36

Ok thankyou

Stuart Report 31 Oct 2016 08:01

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 31 Oct 2016 11:17

Unfortunately, even assuming that's the same Mary Macdonald, and assuming that she had no middle name (there's been no suggestion of one so far), and that she died in Inverness 1948 - 1985, there are still a lot of possible deaths - and still impossible to narrow down without incurring a lot of expense.

There were no deaths in that period of any Mary Macdonalds in Auldearn.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 31 Oct 2016 12:11

Stuart, did they only give you 1948? Or do you have more years listed?

Stuart

Stuart Report 31 Oct 2016 12:52

1948 Austin I have asked for some more in the 50s awaiting this.do you think its likely the same mary macdonald

Potty

Potty Report 31 Oct 2016 13:05

Although the 1939 Register for Scotland is not online, this site gives details of how to obtain and extract:

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/nhs-central-register/about-the-register/1939-national-identity-register-and-how-to-order-an-official-extract

That should give you David and Mary's DOBs

Stuart

Stuart Report 31 Oct 2016 13:08

if its the same mary in 1948 shes going to be what in her late 60s,maybe if the national library can give me some 50s records for this address who knows.question if you went to gros would it be possible to identify mary and if so does anyone do this don't mind paying

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 31 Oct 2016 16:34

GROS research is done at the Scotlands People Centre, which comes under the National Records of Scotland.

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/visit-us/scotlandspeople-centre

Contact them and ask if the sort of search you hope for is possible.

Stuart Report 8 Nov 2016 10:02

so the 1955 rolls its mary m maconald 1 ness place, farquhar macdonald and lizzie a macdonald with a child Catherine r macdonald at no 4 ,haven't seen the m after marys name before any thoughts this is from the Scottish library records

Stuart

Stuart Report 8 Nov 2016 12:52

the caterine r macdonald was not with Farquhar and lizzie in 1954 census so I guess was born 1955

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Nov 2016 13:45

Per SP, the only Catherine R(achel) MacDonald born in Inverness-shire 1950-55 was born in Harris, not Inverness, in 1955.

So - not likely to be the same child, unless Lizzie was away from home for her birth, or unless Catherine isn't their child, but perhaps a visitor.

There's a Catherine without middle initial born Inverness 1955:

MACDONALD
CATHERINE
F
1955
098/A 465 Inverness

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Nov 2016 13:57

I'm inclined to be suspicious of the M as middle initial for Mary, as it hasn't appeared in any previous record.

However, assuming she's the same Mary, it narrows down the number of possible deaths to those between 1955 and 1985-ish - a mere 42 deaths!

But does possibly add 5 deaths for Mary M's!

MCDONALD
MARY MCINTOSH F

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 8 Nov 2016 14:10

Stuart- If the information you've just given is from electoral rolls then the Catherine that appears would be of voting age in 1955 (not born in 1955).

Oh, and it's not the Mary Mcneill Macdonald who died in 1965. She was actually Mary Mcneill MacLeod- widow of Roderick Alexander Macleod and Macdonald was her maiden name.
