I will keep looking Nicola - The name 'could' also be GREW and I have been following one of those too but getting nowhere at the moment................... :-(

Dont give up yet though !!!

I know this area very well, Crondall Street is where my mum went to school, it is just off New North Road and the Elliott side of the family were printers. The writing on the marriage cert is so bad, it's impossible to say for sure. Where do I go from here to find Fred's family? I suppose I need to find his birth cert with father Al????

Nicola

Nicola Report 9 Oct 2016 19:57

Thank you you Dea for looking at it I told you it was bad. Not sure about Crew I just can't see it. Although New North road is only half a mile away from Scrutton Street. My Mum doesnt remember the name Goswell or Crew.

Dea

Dea Report 9 Oct 2016 14:05

Well that would make sense Chris but I keep looking at it and it does seem to say Painter !!! - Mind you, the writing is so appalling that it could say anything - it is the only word on the whole cert which appears to be clearly written !

Gracious!, so Goswell could be Crew...

Chris :)

(possibly below) Edits (image on Ancestry, Occ. Printer)

Marriages Jun 1892 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------
CREW William Holborn 1b 1129
Laver John Henry Holborn 1b 1129
Roberts Eliza Holborn 1b 1129
Stevens Julia Holborn 1b 1129

Births Jun 1895 (>99%)
------------------------------------------
Crew Emma Holborn 1b 691

(Occ. given for Alfred wouldn't be Printer, by any chance, instead of Painter?)

Crondall Street is just over a 1/2 mile walk from Scrutton Street according to Google maps.

Nicola - I think the witness 'may' be William CREW ?? - What do you think ?

If you look at the end of the surname it looks like a double 'l' but if you compare it to the two l's in William they are much shorter. I think it is a 'w'.

It looks like he has stopped joining the letters after what looks like an 'e' and then started again on the line, moving upwards in a curve to the top of a 'w' ??

There is one living nearby who 'might' be him so I am trying to follow him through to hopefully find a connection somewhere:

Just one thing to note at the moment:

You said above "Father Albert Ricketts was listed as deceased on son Frederick marriage cert in 1930."

The marriage cert does 'not' show that he was deceased !!!

The Electrol roll for 39 Scrutton Street found by AustinQ is a great help and I can't wait to look into these other names that where living there during the time that my mum Mary and her siblings were born at 39 Scrutton St. Mum remembers Arthur Stickler he is the father of her youngest brother. She also remembers her grand parents John William Elliott & Elizabeth Alice Elliott living across the road from N0 39.
I will ask her tomorrow if any of the other names ring any bells. It seems that 39 Scrutton Street was the residence of her mothers family the Elliotts and may not shed much light on her father Frederick Ricketts family. Will have to keep searching and thanks everyone

Sorry Dea,
I work long hours and only get late evenings free time but off tomorrow. I have sent the scan copy, let me know when you get it. I really appreciate your help.
Kind regards
Nicky

Hi Nicola.

I think you must be on a different timeline - i.e. in a far away place in the world from me ???

I am trying to stay awake and waiting for your scan to come through as I think I have found something useful for you.

- Come back soon !!!!

You mentioned Frederick Leonard born 1910, son of Albert Leonard.

It's not that Frederick- he married Ruby Wilson in 1934 and is living next door to his Mum in 1939 at 45 Durants Road.

Was thinking that usually in theses cases (as we have found many a time!) some little thing will crop up, that will be the key that opens it up...

Don't get too down, fingers crossed...

Chris :)

How can this be so difficult?? a fairly uncommon surname and have death and marriage certs and know birth was between 1907 and 1910 and father's name and occupation but still can't find anything. can't even find the witness William Goswell, hoping that someone else viewing the marriage cert will help. Thanks Dea for offering to look at it. I have scanned it ready to send.
