Possibly Colin in 1891.
I think a grainer is one who paints things to look like wood.

I know what's wrong!
The Ancestry version of the 1901 census has disconnected Colin and Mary from their children!
There ARE in the household.

644/3 18/ 22 Dennistoun
Colin and Mary plus:
Mary age 5
Jane age 4
Christina age 2
John M age 0

It seems that John may not have been the youngest?

Marriages for these girls are easily located and places this family in Rothesay in the early 1920's

Colin's in Glasgow ER's from 1896 onwards.

From 1896 until 1902, he's at 674 Gallowgate, and then 1905-08 he's at 66 Kelvinhaugh Road.
I don't see him in 1903-4.

There's another gap 1909-10.
Then 1911 - 15, 3 Kelbourne St.
After that the ER stops giving occupation, so although there are Colin Kerrs in later years at various addresses, I can't say for sure which would be him.

I am concerned about saying this but, I have one wee niggling doubt

It is apparent that John McCready Kerr b 1902 in Hutchesontown will be his cousin.
Not quite sure who his parent will have been but it's worth checking because....

Can anyone be certain which one of these 2 men emigrated to Canada?
The man who went to Canada gave an address in Thistle Street yet evidence suggests that the parents ( Colin and Mary) no longer lived in this area.

Of course, Sandra would probably get a positive DNA match no matter which John was her grandfather?

Perhaps Sandra's info is correct after all

Sandra

Argyllgran your people in 1911 are the correct family. Colins address was a shop in Queen Margaret Drive.

Argyllgran the family are the correct family in Maryhill Lanark. I have discovered from my cousin that John was not the youngest. In the family.

Sandra

My grandfather John McCreadie Kerrs headstone has a maple leaf at the top and the letters R. C. N. to the left. It then says
A/COOK
JOHN McC KERR
DIED FEB 4 1946
LEST WE FORGET
Can anyone tell me what this would mean?

Hi Coral, I have that record, which is from when he was in Ireland, before he went to Canada. I thought he must have enlisted somewhere again, in Canada, because of the Maple leaf and the R. C. N. Inscription?

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 27 Mar 2018 16:49

Alison, the inscription means that he was in the Royal Canadian Navy, possibly in WWII?

"Lest we forget" is the ... what would you call it, motto? ... of remembrance of the war dead.

His name is not in the Books of Remembrance so he must not have been a casualty of the war.

WWII records are not publicly available, but since he died in 1946 you could obtain them.

Thanks Jooniecloonie I have submitted a request. If its anything like the trouble I had getting my father's birth certificate it might take a while.

I have received a letter acknowledging my request from Canadian archives. They say I should hear back in approximately 10 months!!

Hi, can anyone tell me if there is a marriage certificate in B. C. For John McCreadie Kerr and Blanch Gushue? Or possibly a death certificate for Blanch, it would be nice to see who gave the information, maybe a child!!!
