Good morning :-)

One member of this family appeared on our local history site. An in-law who died and his military records had been researched and published.

A member of his family contacted us and asked if anyone could find a birth registration for the children of this family?

I am absolutely stumped when looking for births of the children.

In 1871 the place of birth was given as Exeter.

I have gone googly eyed all week can some one please help?

The family member is willing to order all possible birth certs that seem likely in order to prove the parents' details (believed to be William Hook and Elizabeth Sheares).

Yes, we have that marriage, thanks for the info.

Now you can see the problem - the stated birth district :-S

I took all filters out and still couldn't find a string of births for the family.

Originally William was a butcher and then became a farm bailiff (if we have the correct census records).

Any thoughts re the change of stated birth areas?

I can't find any birth reg or baptisms for the children, sorry

I have been working on one of my 'theories' (which may turn out to be total rubbish) but I have to stop for now as I really must do some work etc...

As there do not seem to be any births for these children and I am not sure of a marriage for the parents I thought perhaps they were registered under the wife's name (as often happens)

So, I took the birth places from the 1881 census and found these which 'could' fit the children on there:

Births Sep 1870 (>99%) **** (covers Ilminster!!)
Hodder Frederic Chard 5c 458


Assuming that Elizabeth then was a 'Hodder', I found this for 1861( same place of birth as on 1881) :

No sign of Richard, or his birth reg (Registration was not compulsory until around 1875?), but I did find the following R. Hodder which could be him?

I used the 'butcher' occupation to try and find links too.

I honestly can't understand why the change of districts, this is what has given me a headache.

I will trawl through newspapers too this coming week checking for any announcements (that IS grasping at straws).

No theory is too outlandish to consider..lolol an answer for this lady would be a great achievement :-D

hawkchurch is in devon, thornscombe in dorset but before 1844 in devon, quite close together

According to Dorset OPC the above R Hodder is (probably) Robert Higgins Hodder, illegitimate son of Anne, baptised 6/3/1853.

There are no other Hodders in 1853 and, unfortunately, the Bishop's Transcripts for 1852 and 1854 are missing.

Bridport is not yet on line, and Ilminster and Chard are in Somerset.

I can find no trace of a baptism for William Hook in Dorchester.
