Sorry ArgyllGran you was right William Norrish senior was born in Chard and was the brother of Edwin Norrish.
rootgatherer the William that married an Emma in 1897 was the son of Edwin.
Seem to be drawing dead ends with them now, I'm wondering if William born 1874 went to the USA as his grandfather went there for a while or maybe if his father was in Australia he went there hoping to join him, maybe I'm just clutching at straws I just don't know.
Anyway Thank you for all your help at least we made some progress
All the best
Wendy :-D

Hi ArgyllGran,
Yes I think the same as you and the William who married Emma in 1897 is not the one I'm looking for.
As for his father William I don't think he was the one born in Chard I think he was born in Sandford Devon. I'm going into Nottingham Archives today so will be able to get on Ancestry and do some digging.

I don't think the William who married emma Brownett in 1897 (posted by RG on page 1) can be the right one.
At least, in both 1901 and 1911 his birth year is given as 1879:
William Norrish in the 1901 England Census Name: William Norrish Age: 22 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male Spouse: Emma Norrish Birth Place: Nottinghamshire, England Civil Parish: Nottingham Ecclesiastical parish: Old Radford County/Island: Nottinghamshire Country: England Registration district: Nottingham Sub-registration district: Nottingham North West ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 3183 Folio: 50 Page Number: 1 Household schedule number: 5 Household Members: Name Age William Norrish 22 Emma Norrish 24 Dorothy Norrish 2
Also, his army record says he was 36 years and 2 months old in December 1914 - so born October 1878.

Thinking about Clara being born in Australia.
If William Norrish, born 1851 Chard (Edwin's brother) was indeed Clara's father, there's a tree on Ancestry which seems oblivious to his marriage to Elizabeth Wallace/Wallis - if he's the same William.
It says he married Esther Collingwood Watson in 1877 • Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, and died in 1907 in Claremont, WA. They had 12 children, but 8 of them died.
Presumably his birth:
Births Jun 1851 (>99%) Norris William Chard 10 396
and death:
William Norrish in the Australia, Death Index, 1787-1985 Name: William Norrish Death Place: Western Australia Registration Year: 1907 Registration Place: Claremont, Western Australia Registration Number: 14 From another tree:
The following report appeared in the Kalgoorlie Western Argus newspaper on 29 Jan 1907 as follows :-
"GOING TO KARRAKATTA" Perth Jan 25
William Norrish, a french polisher in James Street, Perth, an elderly man, was found this afternoon near the Karrakatta Cemetery with a bullet wound through his head. A revolver was found by his side. The deed was done in the Church of England portion of the cemetery, a few feet from the grave of his wife, who died two years ago. This morning he met an undertaker's employee and said he was going to Karrakatta. Another report said William was in "straitened" circumstances at the time. In Jun 1899, there was a report of the property (cottage) at Vincent Street known as "Norrish's" being sold at a morgtagees auction.
If Clara was born in Melbourne in 1878, it looks as if he can't be her father, if he married Esther in 1877.
But perhaps he and Elizabeth went out to Australia some time between 1872 (or 1874 if William Frederick is their child) and 1877 (wish I could find some record), and separated . Then maybe Elizabeth had another partner who was Clara's father.
All supposition! Maybe that William isn't the one who married Elizabeth, after all.

I wonder if Edwin's brother William could be the husband of your Elizabeth Norrish, and father of Bessie, and presumably Clara?
Elizabeth's age is a couple of years out from her actual birth on the marriage record, so William's could be too.
I did wonder if they might both have lied about their ages in order to get married - though their parents would have had to be in on that!
(That's assuming the marriage is the 1867 Derby one posted by safc yesterday at 18:34.)
