(the 2 Baptisms for Wisbech, St. Augustine come from 'Cambridgeshire Baptism Index cd', you then need to see that Parish Register for further details)

The result comes up with no problem for me, Tigsmum.
Just select birth record, then enter Burgess, and Lilian, and 1914, then click Search.
(Actually, no need to enter "Lilian".)

Chris, I agree entirely about your ability to find newspaper articles !!
You say you found Lilian E Burgess, born 1914, in the Cambridge Index but I can't find any record. What am I doing wrong !! If its a basic error I'm making it might explain why my research has been so laborious.

Tigsmum have sent a message ( see messages at top of page) re something not directly connected to your search for Alice, that I came across, and as it involves a possibly living person thought it better to send privately.

I'm just utterly "gobsmacked". You've given me more information in an afternoon than I've managed to dig up over months . How do you DO that!! The only down side to this is that I shall now have to order several more certificates !
My brain is totally scrambled now so I shall leave it for the moment. I am so, so grateful to you all for your amazing help. I shall be back! :-) :-)

Bet Cherilyn (Australian helper) on below would like to have a 'nosey' around also!, if you want to ask her, try on below, she might be able to delve further!)

I don't understand your reference to the HMS Hampshire website, which certainly has a connection with my Dad but to the best of my knowledge Flowers was his stepfather.

Yes Elizabeth died in 1918 and Flowers subsequently re-married in 1922. I'm sorry if I've not given you all the info I have but initially my post was to try to find more about Alice. This is now very exciting because it occurs to me that the person who nominated them in Queensland could actually be the childrens' ( Alice and William/Archibald) father ! The only thing I ever knew about him was that my Dad said he"went down with Kitchener" i.e. HMS Hampshire so if I can find a connection between the nominator and HMS Hampshire (I know of that website) there's just an outside chance he might be my grandfather"" :-D
