Ann - my mob has no known connection with Scowcroft.
I think the 2 spare kids belong to this couple: Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1892q2 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference HUNT Emily THORNLEY Harry Barton-on-Irwell Register Office or Registrar Attended Salford BAR/23/98

I've listed Ada's 7 births and 2 deaths, with two extra Thornley-Hunt births thrown in (for Elsie and Fred). My guess is that these belong to Harry & Emily.
Who are? Harry and Emily

One thing that's been bugging me - who is James Dootson? Well, he's Edith's bro and the girls' uncle.

Footnote Until 1898, only C of E, jews, quakers, and the registrars were authorized to keep official marr rego's. Non-conformist churches could become a registered place for marrs, and non-conformist ministers could conduct a religious marr ceremony, but the marr only becaame official with the couple signing the marr register, so an asst registrar would attend non-conformist marrs with his official rego for the couple to sign. (It was up to the church if they wanted to keep their own unofficial marr rego's, and what info those records contained:
As an e.g., this is my wife's gg grandparents marr: Marriage: 23 Jun 1838 St John RC, Wigan, Lancs. [unnamed] McCann - [unnamed] Aspinall - Groom's Parents: Samuelis McCann, civitatis Wigan & Brigittae Bride's Parents: Jacobi Aspinall, [of Wigan] & Mariae Witness: Patricio McArdal, [of Wigan]; Esther Jackson, [of Wigan] Married by: Hen. Segrave Miss. Apos. Notes: [Bride's and groom's names not recorded. Here their surnames are taken from their parents] Register: Marriages 1837 - 1840, Page 40 Source: Original register at LRO )
The situation changed in 1898, although congregational approval and the refistrar's approval process could ake some time - e.g., Marriage: 8 Dec 1906 Daisy Hill Primitive Methodist Chapel, Westhoughton , Lancs. ... Register: Marriages 1906 - 1927, Page 1, Entry 1 although baptisms there date back to at least 1871. RCs didn't seek authorization until the 1980s, I think.
Anyway, the point was to explain a LancsBMD entry reading:
Church / Register Office Register Office or Registrar Attended
Apologies if you already knew all this.

Mgnv totally confused now
John Thornley b: 1855 married twice 1. Edith Dootson b: c1861 have no date for marriage 2. Ada Clarkson Hunt b:c1873 (my GGrandmother)
1911 Census has John Thornley and Ada Clarkson Thornley (nee Hunt) living at 201 Leigh Road Westhoughton It state's that John and Ada had been married 17yrs 7 children born 2 died.
There is a possibility but not yet confirmed there may have been children from the marriage of John Thornley and Edith Dootson
I have census info for 1861 John at home with parents Samuel and Mary + two siblings I have info for 1871 Census John not at home only parents Samuel and Mary + his 2 siblings
No Info for 1881 & 1891 Census as yet
John Thornley had 2 siblings I can find at the moment Margaret b 1859 and George b: 1861
Many thanks :-) :-) :-)

Some final notes
I looked up Goosnargh in ref rg12 at TNA and got piece #, and quickly got her exact age from Ancestry
I can see enough 1891 details to guess it's probly our Ada, but not enough to be informative: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QYQF-9T2 [Piece/Folio 3447/ 4 Page Number 2]
--------------- Why I wanted the live died 1911 #s for Ada:
Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference 1893q3 THORNLEY Elsie Little Hulton Bolton HUNT LH/40/448 1894q4 THORNLEY George Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/33/27 1897q1 THORNLEY Winifred E[Emma] Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/37/198 1898q2 THORNLEY Fred Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/40/58 1899q1 THORNLEY Norman Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/41/275 1901q1 THORNLEY Ernest Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/45/288 1904q4 THORNLEY Albert J[Job] Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/52/371 1906q2 THORNLEY Irvine Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/55/234 1908q4 THORNLEY Ada Horwich Bolton HUNT HOR/59/480

* added a post-em to FreeBMD "Surname is mis-indexed - should be Thornley. Birth was 1904q4 Bolton 8c 437"
So where's Elsie & Fred? - they're not with Ada in 1911, nor with their half-sisters.
-------------- It is possible that the missing kids belong to another Thornley-Hunt couple, so I looked for all instances in the GRO index thru 1911 where the surnames Hunt & Thornley appeared on the same GRO page. There were 5 other instances with a male Thornley & a female Hunt. The first 2 below didn't pair up
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1858q4 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference HUNT Elizabeth PARTINGTON Benjamin Bolton, St Mary the Virgin, Deane Parish Church Bolton 24/9/23

This leaves just 3 - I've used more links from http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd to sort this out. The 1st marr seems much too early, but (lacking Ada's live/died numbers, I didn't investigate further.

Ann - I'm in the same sub-less boat. There is a freebie on WW1 records upcoming: http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1360722
However, you can get some limited info from free searches on FMP and Ancestry. Take our Ada in 1911 - we want the specific 1911 search screens. On Ancestry: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2352 NB Check the box that makes Ancestry get exact matches only.
On Ancestry, I can make a guess that Ada's living in Westhoughten in 1911. I can look up Ada Thornley on the 1911 English census - there are 35 hits, including our Ada Clarkson Thornley. (Ada Clarkson Thornley is a unique name in 1911.) I can narrow down the location info, checking I'm still getting a hit for her. She's in Bolton RD, and in Horwich subdistrict. (Westhoughton - sometimes West Houghton - was a subdistrict in Bolton RD until 1884. In the mid 1880s (and again in the mid 1900s), Bolton's subdistricts were reordered, and Westhoughten became part of an expanded Horwich subdistrict. Itis also a civil parish.) With this level of geographic specification, I can look for just plain Thornley - there are 45 hits, but it's easy to pick out the following family:
Name Parent or spouse names Birth Year Birth Place Relation Residence John Thornley Ada Clarkson abt 1855 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire Ada Clarkson Thornley John abt 1873 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire George Thornley John,Ada Clarkson abt 1895 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire Norman Thornley John,Ada Clarkson abt 1899 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire Ernest Thornley John,Ada Clarkson abt 1901 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire Irvine Thornley John,Ada Clarkson abt 1907 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire Ada Thornley John,Ada Clarkson abt 1909 location relation Westhoughton , Lancashire
I could also guess the relationships - Head, wife, son and daughter cover over 90% of relationships. Although it doesn't arise here, what this would miss is, say, a Hunt rellie or uncle William Clarkson visiting them.
It's easiest to catch this on FMP. Again we need the specific 1911 search screen. So go to FMP and look at their A-Z Record Sets - start typing 1911[blank] and click on the 1911 census in the list. At the foot of the screen, you can enter Ada Clarkson Thornley, and see who's in the h/h - no one new:
First name(s) Last name Birth year Birth place Registration district Parish County John Thornley 1855 Lancs Westhoughton Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire Ada Clarkson Thornley 1873 Lancs Leigh Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire George Thornley 1895 Lancs Horwich Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire Norman Thornley 1899 Lancs Horwich Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire Ernest Thornley 1901 Lancs Horwich Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire Irvine Thornley 1907 Lancs Westhoughton Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire Ada Thornley 1909 Lancs Westhoughton Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire [NB - it does give pob]
If I search for Ada's step-daur, Nellie Thornley, FMP finds just one in
Registration district Parish County Bolton Westhoughton Lancashire
I can specify these location parameters, and see who's living with her:
[rg14/23344] First name(s) Last name Birth year Birth place Margaret Thornley 1860 Lancs Westhoughton Mary Alice Thornley 1883 Lancs Westhoughton Nellie Thornley 1885 Lancs Westhoughton Jmaes Dootson 1849 Lancs Westhoughton
I've been fortunate in being able to look for fairly unique names. How would I handle something more common, like James Smith living in Westhoughton, say.
Go to http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and use the advanced search. Search for Westhoughten - specify within the ref rg14 This ref identifies the 1911 census returns - rg9 thru rg14 identify the returns for 1861 thru 1911 respectively (ho107 is used for both of 1841 & 1851).
I get hits like: Reference: RG 14/23340 Description: Registration Sub-District: Horwich Civil Parish, Township or Place:Westhoughton (part) RD 461 RS 4 ED 13
with a context (in footer) of: Lancashire [conty] Bolton [rego district]
There were 3 classes of enumerators: 1) regular enumerators - the guys who walked the streets; 2) heads of institutions - workhoses, prisons, asylums, stc.; 3) masters of vessels in port. The first 2 classes were given ED (Enumerator's District) numbers. In 1911, regular EDs (class 1) were given a piece number. Class 2 EDs were grouped and each group was given a piece number.
In previous years a bunch of EDs would be given a common piece number, and (usually) each subdistrict would have one or more piece numbers.
In 1911, Horwich had 22 EDs, the last 10 of which (EDs 13-22, so piece #s 23340-22349) were for Westhoughton.
So, on Ancestry, I can look up a name like James Smith, and successively pin him down to Bolton RD, Horwich sub-RD, ED 17 which translates to piece 23344. I can enter this on FMP to see who else are in the h/h. Occassionally, even this won't get a unique James Smith, and FMP will return everyone who's in a h/h with some James Smith. It's then a question of entering these names and looking for overlaps - it can be messy.
Not infrequently, there are mistranscriptions which can make it hard to locate someone I've found on FS/FMP (who use the same transcription) on Ancestry or vice-versa. If I use the search pages specific for that census year on Ancestry, I can enter the piece/folio/page # with the names left blank, and see all the names on that page. Any name on that page will get me the census image, but I can usually guess how the name's been mistranscribed. (Caution - Ancestry 1881 doesn't use the true ref, but the ref for the head of h/h - which affects h/h's that are split across pages)
If I look at a census image 1851-1901, the census year class # and the piece # appear on the PRO copyright slip off in the margin of the image. The page # is printed on the page, and (half the time) the folio # is stamped in the top right - the other half of the time, the folio # is on the front side of the sheet, and you're looking at the back.
The 1841 census as organized on difft lines - EDs were grouped into books and each piece contains a group of books. The PRO slip for book 4 in piece 123 would show ho107/123/4.
In 1911, a piece # plus a h/h seq # should identify a h/h, so on Ancestry, this works for, say, piece 12345 seq # 67, but fails for larger piece #s which happens as one goes north - it starts to fail in Smethwick, the last subdistrict in Worcs. It's not available on FMP searches.

Ann - 12 and 2 - well I guess I found the 12, and the Geo on 1871 has vanished, so I guess he's one death, I think the 2nd Geo is the second death, and that Emma has probably emigrated, maybe to Oz. I didn't get any likely hits for Emma Hunt on the US 1910 & 1920, but she could be wed by then. I also got no likely his for Emma, Albert, nor Daisy and Mary Hunt in Canada 1921.
Do you have the 1911 numbers of live births and of deaths for Ada? Do you have a sub that lets you view and download census images - who with?

I can find the kids on all censuses, with 2 exceptions: I can't find Albert 1911, (nor Doris, nor Mary) - maybe they emigrated.

I can't find Ada in 1891 - she'ld be 18 then. It seems odd (but not impossible) that she'ld be the only one not living at home. I'm inclined to think she was at home, and accidentally omitted by the parent who filled out the form, or the enumerator who copied it onto the summary sheet. Having said that, my ma-i-l had an aunt that I couldn't find as a teenager. She became a WW1 widow, and at my bro-i-l's prompting, I investigated her hubby in connection with some WW1 centenary event, and found the aunt in Middlesb'ro - the other side of the country, working in a shop run by her half-aunt, whom I'd lost track of on her marr 40y earlier.
