Yes unfortunately that's where it ends- it's only a short snippet. It does sound a little like a suicide attempt, or perhaps an attempt to make people believe he had- but I don't suppose we'll ever know!
Safc- are there two closed records on that 1939 register with Gladys?

Thanks AustinQ, I will definitely look into that one about George.
I believe his brother William died In 1935 he would've been about 36, but I suppose I would need the death certificate to find out the cause of death.
George is listed as a garage foreman on his marriage cert which would tie in with Reuben Royce garage.
Prickly, George's first wife is on his marriage cert to Mary Letitia.
I recall on previous research I discovered he had 2 boys with Gladys. She appears to have passed away near George's marriage to Mary.
I am trying to hard to look for Mary Letitia Scott and her father Frank Scott. There seem to have been 2 Franks pass away in Nottingham, 1910 and 1942,
The address of the place in Stirling (9 Gladstone place) Looks to be an NHS place of some sort today. I cannot find a family connection in Scotland.

There's a little more info on this one:
Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail - Tuesday 20 June 1933
A car and clothing were found on the water's edge at Mill Beach, Essex yesterday, belonging to George Edwin Carter (31) a motor engineer of Danbury near Chelmsford. Mr Carter who is married and has three children, left home in his motor car to have a bathe at Mill Beach.

That 1939 doesn't appear to be the same man in the article or the the man that PH put the birth and death up for. In 1933 his age was 31.
Maybe poster can confirm George's age

Couldn't find anything on Mary but thought this might be of interest:
Essex Newsman - Saturday 24 June 1933
RETURNED HOME The discovery of a motor car containing articles of a man's clothing at Mill Beach on Sunday led the police to make enquiries. In one of the pockets of the clothing in the car was found a driving license belonging to Mr George Edwin Carter, aged 31, a married man, employed at Mr Reuben Royce's garage at Danbury, Pc Sewell and other officers engaged in an extensive search, but without any result. Happily Mr Carter has since returned safely to his home at Danbury.

Find My past has the 1939 registers as part of the subscription. If not a member you can pay to access I believe and also from National Archives (expensive).
Members on here with FMP access are always willing to do look ups.
Whatever her Father's occupation was at the time of her marriage, may not have been the same in 1911 - the last census with access at present. He also may not have existed ...
And depending on the way the question was asked, whether it says deceased or not on the marriage certificate, might be the opposite.

Thank you all, Prickly I have had a lot of success with the Carters, they were very easy to trace back, Essex and Suffolk Ag labs and had kids in their early 20's. But I am feeling very disappointed with the Scott research.
Greyghost, where did you get this 1939 record from? Is it the electoral roll? I couldnt find anything in Scotland either but just seems strange to me that she would go all that way unless she had some connection there. Looking at the Carters I presumed most women had children quite young.

There are no birth matches in Scotland for a Mary L(etitia) or Letitia M(ary) Scott from 1900-1915
Could it have been that she had relatives in Scotland that she went to for her son's birth?
There are many 35 year olds not married and with no children, maybe just never met the right man until your Father's Father came along.

Her death which gives the birthdate you have above.
Do you know this is her birthdate for sure, or have you only got that from the death registration? Information given to the Registrar would be to the best knowledge of the person giving it.
