Yes unfortunately that's where it ends- it's only a short snippet. It does sound a little like a suicide attempt, or perhaps an attempt to make people believe he had- but I don't suppose we'll ever know!

Safc- are there two closed records on that 1939 register with Gladys?

George's father died in 1935:

The funeral of Mr WIlliam Carter took place at the parish Church on Saturday, the Rector, the Rev. J G Fenn officiating. For the past 23 years deceased was employed at Tyndales Farm, He was ill for 6 days only, and was aged 69. He leaves a widow and two sons. The mourners at the funeral were Mr W R Carter and Mr G. E. Carter (sons), Mr J Carter (brother), Mrs Guiver and Mrs L Jennings (sisters), Mssrs A and G Ellis (Brother's-in-law), Mrs J Carter (sister-in-law), Mrs Edna Carter (Niece), Mrs WR Carter and Mrs G E Carter (daughter's-in-law)... Among the beautiful tributes was one from his workmates and one from Mr Basil Ratcliff. Owing to illness the widow was unable to attend. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Baker & Sons, Danbury.

Chelmsford Chronicle - Friday 14 May 1948

The funeral took place on May 6th at St Mary's Church of Mrs Gladys Grace Carter of 62 Loftin Way, Beehive lane who died at Chelmsford Hospital, aged 46. She was the youngest daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Wm Hawkes of East Hanningfield. The Rev. F A Casson (vicar) officiated. The mourners were Messrs Douglas and Tony (sons), Miss Betty Carter (daughter), Mr Walter Hawkes, and Mr & Mrs Edwin Hawkes (brothers and sister-in-law), Mrs O Dollimer (sister), Mrs P Hawkes (sister-in-law), Mr William Hawkes (Nephew), Miss R Dollimer (niece).

I must have mixed up the death of William Carter senior and William Carter junior (George's bro) William junior's army papers discharged him to Tyndles farm.

Still no luck with Mary Letitia Scott and Frank Scott :-(

After searching for information regarding my 2x Grt Grandmother for over 8 years, before throwing the towel in, as a last ditch attempt i posted a thread on here at the weekend,

And guess what?........We finally found her.

The address George gave when he changed his surname was the address of his wife and children in 1939. You would have thought that he would have moved out of the family home when he divorced but perhaps his wife and children did.

Safc, I thought that would mean they were still born? Or died shortly after birth.

Maybe George moved back into his old family home after his wife died in order to take care of/ be with his children.

Looks like he sold a few items- or it might have been his son selling them.

CARTER, on Sept 14th to Sheila (nee Murrey), wife of Pilot Officer Dougals Carter of 62 Loftin Way Chelmsford- a son, (Glenroy Douglas)

His older children would've been old enough to look after themselves so probably sold the items. His marriage certificate would suggest that he was living at Lower Roman Road in July.

The marriage so soon after Gladys death would seem to imply he wasn't divorced, and wasn't free to marry until Gladys' death.

Just wonder who was living in 1939, at the address George gave when he married.

Were they relatives of his first wife's?

n 1939 George was living with Gladys at 62 Loftin Way, and possibley his Hawkes inlaws were living at 7 Roman Road. Then in 1945 George and his new wife Mary are living at 7 Lower Roman Road.

For anyone has any suggestions of how I could find Mary Letitia Scott's birth I would appreciate it.

Gave birth the her son in Stirling (1943), lived in Nottngham (at least 1939-1943)
then 7 Lower Roman Road (marriage cert June 1948).

So far I have checked all the Mary Scotts Qu2 and Qu3 births 1908 and tried to check them against the census births for Mary Scotts age 2 and 3 in 1911.

I have checked other Mary Letitia's with different surnames and then looked for a marriage from that surname to Scott.

I have tried to match up a Frank/ Francis Scott and Mary Scott in the same Reg district and Sub district for the 1911 census. There are some but on checking the household census they are not living in the same household.

I have looked at deaths of Frank Scott between 1908 and 1911 incase he died before the census.

I can't find her in Scottish Records.

George changed his name from Carter to Scott in August 1945 giving his address as 62 Loftin Way. I have no idea if he was divorced at this point or if Mary was living with him.

Have you checked Irish records?

Maybe not this one- but there maybe others??

Just out of interest I tried a quick search on this Mary Letitia Scott- she was born 1839 in Dublin. In 1901 she appears in Cardiff living with her daughter Elizabeth S Evatt. Mary must have gone back to Ireland, but I wonder if this is her daughter travelling to Canada in 1909- she's travelling with a Mrs M L Scott age 28:

Perhaps M L Scott is the parent of your Mary Letitia? could she have been born Canada?? Obviously needs more work- but worth checking out.

The probate that Choccy has posted says Gladys was a single woman so they probably did divorce.

I wonder if Mary Letitia had been married before and Scott wasn't her birth name. Or if Her father died in WW1 and Scott was her stepfather's surname.

As your Grandad was born during WW2, there are many possible reasons for him being born in Stirling other than Mary Letitia having family connections there. Using the free search facilities on Scotlandspeople, there are a couple of Mary Letitia births about the right time but without using a surname. None in Stirling though. Again using the free search facility there is one possible Mary Letitia on the 1911 Scottish census (only available on Scotlandspeople).

Could I access the Irish births? Would they say her full name?

Mary could have been adopted and had her name changed.
