Well, it's still Scotlands People you need, though records are patchy as far back as RB's grandfathers' time and earlier.

I'll repeat the link I gave at the beginning of this thread, to a tree showing names of both his grandfathers and their siblings. No idea how accurate it is - you'd have to verify for yourself - but at least it's a starting point with clues to some names and dates:

Well, I thought I had successfully researched my original quest, only to be told it goes beyond the Robert Burns/Burness link - it is thought my search should be concentrated on the Robert Burns grandfather! So back to the drawing board.

If the details in that Burness family tree are correct, then you can ignore my records for a (wrong) James Mitchell Mitchell !

It says:

"James Mitchell Mitchell was born on 28 October 1892 in Gallaton, Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of Robert Mitchell and Margaret Elizabeth Frances Burness."

Then you can click on his parents' names (on the Burness tree) to find out about their ancestors.

Yes, those members who help on here usually do have subscriptions to sites such as ancestry and FindMyPast, and may know about other "weird" sites where information may be found. I, for example, often direct people to a site called the Blacksmiths Index, which most have never heard of. I found it by accident!

Unfortunately, research in Scotland involves Scotland's People, and also FamilySearch appears to have Parish Records.

Family Search is a free site, and is fine if you keep to documented records. Their "Member Submitted Information" tend to be "iffy" at best.

I've also found that using Google can sometimes produce nuggets of gold! Because of Google, I found a 1791 marriage in the Parish Records for a small town in Yorkshire.

SylviainCanada - I wasn't asking other members to spend their credits researching for me. I am aware that some members of G.R have links to sites and/or have far more 'professional' knowledge of gaining information than I have.

yes, but that means that Scotland's people is probably the record ............ and everyone has to BUY credits

It is not a subscription site where you can look up many records for one price, one has to pay to look at the detail for every single record.

THAT is why it is unfair to ask other people to spend their own money to do your research.

YOU yourself can search on Scotland's People for free, see if there are any records available, and then choose which records you are going to pay to see.

I am is aware that the Mitchells lived at Stonehaven, which is in Kincardineshire which is where the Burns/Burness link is. ,

the place to look for Scottish records is Scotland's People. That is NOT a subscription site, you have to buy credits to look at information.

It is unfair to ask other members to spend their own money to do your research.

It is possible to search on that site for free, and to see if there are any records, and then to buy credits to look at the records selectively.


Otherwise, use the Mormon site Family Search, which is free, or Google

I have name(s) to try and research backwards hoping to establish Link to Burns/Burness:
Peter Mitchell b approx 1921 died approx 1989
Married Betty Lane approx 1947 ? Possibly Birmingham area
Peter's father : James Mitchell Mitchell (correct not a misprint)
Trying to establish father of James Mitchell Mitchell.
Mitchell family may be recorded at Stonehaven Scotland
Possible link to Margaret Burness.
