This is amazing! I am bowled over by your kindness and expertise. These are huge leaps forward in piecing together Nellie's story. It means so much. Thank-you!
1901 Living in Upper Street, Islington working as Draper's Assistant
1903 - Living at 62 Marylebone Lane. She gives birth to Harold in September of this year at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.
1906 - Nellie Ranyell b. 1882, Tottenham, Middlesex - is living in Lambeth at the house of Lavinia Groom (midwife) where she has Irene Lucie Lavinia Ranyell (my Nana).
1907 - Nellie trained as a midwife at the General Lying-in Hospital in either Lambeth or Marylebone. (Don't know where the children are.)
Then - she goes off the grid until 1911 when she returns from Bombay with Alice Reed (b. 1880, daughter of Joseph Hepworth, b. 1835, successful clothier) and her baby son, Eric. She is on the census at their house, Hazelwood, in Torquay.
(In the 1911 Census - her widowed mother, Eliza Eugenie Ranyell, 58, is head of household at 651 Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, Essex living with her son Ernest, 25, and daughter, Dorothy, 20.)
1913 - she returns from Bombay to Plymouth, May 23rd. Her son, Harold is at King Edward's Grammar in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk where she is listed as Parent. (By 1914, he is in Norfolk at the Boys Model School - a charity school with Mr. Helsdon as his parent/guardian).
December 14th, 1915 - January 12th, 1916 she is nurse to Begum of Manavadar and just disappears never to be heard from again.

Sorry PH- didn't see that :-)
It's really frustrating- trying to look for Irene/ Nellies returning from India. There are loads!
Haven't followed this one through yet- but maybe Nellie was taken for a nickname of Ellen or Helen?
Name: Helen Irene Smith Birth Date: abt 1885 Age: 45 Port of Departure: Bombay, India Arrival Date: 11 Apr 1930 Port of Arrival: London, England Ports of Voyage: Plymouth Ship Name: Ranpura Shipping line: Peninsula and Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd Official Number: 148119
She appears to be travelling with S. Brabrant Smith 44, and Denham Smith 5
EDIT: SCRAP THIS ONE- a tree has the marriage in 1919- her name was Helen Irene Griffiths.

Thank-you so much all of you. How kind of you to take your time to help. Unfortunately, I've managed to track her as far as Bombay with the Begum of Manavadar until January 1916 and then she disappeared. Could she have died from the influenza epidemic? Or... married and reinvented herself? Juliet
