Hi, John Whittington was also my great grandfather, look for Reuben under the name of Hough, as Eliza left him for another guy, had all the children christened in his name, my maternal grandad didn't find out his real surname until the night before he got married. Eliza ended up marrying a Charles Edward Rawlings, and she died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1913. If you look at census under the name of Hough, there's a wealth of information . Hope this helps

Hi David, my great uncle Reuben was still alive in the 1960's, as we used to go to visit him in Aston, Birmingham. He used to do the bedding flowers for Birmingham council, and had a nursery on his land. The family story goes that he emigrated to Australia sometime in the 60's, decided he'd had enough, and off they went. Great aunt Fanny was alive in the 60's too
Grt. Uncle Reuben walked over from Birmingham to Coventry the night before my grandad John, got married to tell him that he wasn't a Hough, he was a Whittington
As you know, Eliza married Charles Rawlings in 1911, and she remarried as Eliza Whittington, she died in 1913, from cirrhosis of the liver, and Charles Rawlings died in 1916, from chronic bronchitis, in the Birmingham workhouse. I think that they'd parted ways before Eliza died, as my grandad went from Coventry to Birmingham to be with her when she died.

Wow, Brenda, this is amazing.

I've only just seen your posts of 25 Feb 2017, after nearly two years! Much of what you say fits in with my knowledge, some is contradictory. I'll look at your comments more fully, but I am going to be pretty busy over the next few days. I'll get back to you in a week or so, when I've digested what you say. I had more or less accepted that my great grandfather was actually Henry Hough and not John Whittington, so what you say seems to disprove this theory and has rather knocked me for six! More later.

Send Brenda a PM. I doubt she’s looking at the boards with only 2 posts to her name, both of them on this thread
