Thank you Chris, the references to PricklyHolly's posts are spot on and I have used that info in my tree. The problem has been I have been doing so much recently my brain isn't quite keeping up all the time, or I have inadvertently dropped it into the wrong Word file.
However I am unable to understand the relevance to the first half of your post, ref Margaret Dixon - the name doesn't ring any bells ?

That looks great Andy. Were the other children born in Scarborough too?

Sorry, I'm too slow for you cos now you have provided Glandford Brigg!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 27 Dec 2015 21:36

From the 1861 and 1881 censuses, both posted earlier, other children were born in Lincolnshire.

In the 1871, which Andy posted, William G was born Bonby, Lincs; Walter in Thornton, Lincs.; and Ellen in Bonby, Lincs.

Trouble again !!

Yesterday Andy found the marriage (FreeBMD style) at Glandford Brigg - a few lines above.
Now I have been trying to take this couple back further and come up with

1851 Census
George Dixon Head M 37 Barnetby, Lincolnshire
Margret Dixon Wife F 35 Whadingham, Lincolnshire
Elizabeth Dixon Daughter F 13 Whadingham, Lincolnshire
John Dixon Son M 11 Searby, Lincolnshire
William Dixon Son M 10 Bigby, Lincolnshire
Mary Dixon Daughter F 6 Bigby, Lincolnshire
Charles Dixon Son M 3 Bigby, Lincolnshire
George Dixon Son M 1 Bigby, Lincolnshire

which is a good match but I wondered if anybody could see tha marriage with the brides father named, to prove the connection?

Many thanks,
Frances

From DetEcTive's link:

GLANFORD BRIGG REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Sub-districts : Barton, Brigg, Scunthorpe, Winterton.
Registers currently held at : North Lincolnshire.

Now the local index for N Lincs is online via:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd

I was interested to try this index out as I've neer used this one.

Here's the names ArgyllGran posted
year Surname Forename Second forename Third forename Fourth forename RegisterNumber EntryNumber
1859 COOK Ellen BA1/17 16
1860 COOK William G BA1/18 160
1863 COOK Walter BA1/20 398

It looks like all were rego'ed in the Barton subdistrict.

I've never used this index, and wondered what a death looked like.
Here's a random 1860 death from the Brigg subdistrict - unfortunately, no age is given:
Surname Forename First initial Second initial Maiden name RegisterNumber EntryNumber
COOK Charlotte BR1/10 450

Here's the look up for the marr Andy posted - the GRO index only has two names on that page

Surname Forename First initial Second initial Maiden name Book number Entry number
COOK Joseph RO.2 161
DIXON Elizabeth RO.2 161

Here's a random GRO index lookup:

Marriages Jun 1857 (>99%)
COOK Sarah Glanford Brigg 7a 1371
Maw Ann Glanford Brigg 7a 1371
Maw George Glanford Brigg 7a 1371
Turner Charles Glanford Brigg 7A 1371

and the corresponding local index lookups:

COOK Sarah C 35.1 320
MAW Ann C 35.1 321
MAW George C 35.1 321
TURNER Charles C 35.1 320

From the entry #s, we can see the Maws wed each other.

This index decodes nothing for us - it's not hard to guess BA=Barton & BR=Brigg, but what church C35 is code for is a mystery. The C prefix usually indicates a C of E church, as it does here - pre-1898, only Jews, Quakers, C of E (and the registrar) were authorized to keep official marr registers. The local index often uses J or S; Q or F; or some code beginning with R for these other alternatives.

After 1898, non-conformists could be authorized to keep official marr rego's - often coded by A - although the RCs chose not to apply until 1980-ish.

If a marr was held in a non-conformist church/chapel, a registrar would need to attend with his official marr rego for the couple to sign to conclude the ceremony, so your Cook-Dixon couple could have wed in a rego office, or in a non-conformist church - the code doesn't distinguish so far as I can tell.

a note on Andrew's Joseph Cook baptisms

unless there were two Joseph and Mary Cook couples having children at the same time ...

Joseph 1809 was probably a 'replacement' for Joseph 1807 who died in infancy or early childhood

very common phenomenon

Oh dear, now I am really in trouble. I have just come across all these wonderful additions to my thread, that I saw after I had added the new thread, which some of you will see as a repetition. With all that has gone on recently I had totally forgotten about it. Mea culpa ?
