Did you discount the Isle of Man connection?

Classification: Query
Surnames: Greene, Hall,
Julius and Eleanor Greene settled on the Isle of man in approx 1860 and remained there from '61-'01c mainly in 'Onchan'. Julius, retired lieut EIC, appears to have died between '69-'71 aged under 40yrs, leaving his family, wife Eleanor bn Cawnpore India 1834, dau Eleanor bn 1857 Jersey, son Alfred bn 1859 Jersey, Mary bn 1861 Douglas Isle of Man,Edward George bn 1866 Douglas Isle of Man, Henry bn 1867 Douglas IofM, Amelia bn 1869 Douglas IofM. Also living with tthem throughout this time is Amelia Mary Hall, mother of Eleanor, bn 1815 Ghazapore, India, widow of George James Hall, living on pension EIC. Presumably Julius, Eleanor snr and Amelia Mary Halls all died on the Isle of Man but the daughters may have married and moved away as might the sons. Does anyone know anything about this family?"

Hi, All the details are taken from the will of Aviott Aganoor who died in 1862. As you say Ada Is named as Vernon but there is always the possibility of another marriage prior to Vernon or even an illegitimate child given the Vernon name after marriage. I have always thought that Amelia was probably born around 1820-30 but it might have been a little earlier, Ada must have been born prior to 1862 .
Thanks for your interest.

MargaretM Report 17 Nov 2015 21:41

If the census that Malyon posted is the correct family then Ada was born 1876 so wouldn't have been a Vernon, surely?

You mention Ada is named in a will, can you say whose will it is an when ?

I'm having a hard time finding anything. May I ask how you know that she was Amelia Vernon in January 1862 and Amelia Hall in April?

Just because it fills out a few details this earlier query of is perhaps useful, just as background for helpers.

Lesley Report 17 Nov 2015 20:10

I am searching for this lady dob unknown but probably 1830ish, who in January 1862 is known as Mrs Amelia Mary Vernon of 21, Robert Street, Oxford Street, W1. By the 29th April 1862 she is shown as Amelia Hall (otherwise Vernon) wife of George James Hall of 24, Robert St, Oxford St, W1 and is said to have a daughter called Ada. I have spent many years trying to find this person but have never been able to find a marriage to a Vernon or to George James Hall or the birth of Ada Vernon. I have two possible census sightings, in '51 and '61 I have Amelia Vernon bn Southampton shown as 'landed proprietor' , in '51 she is married but in '61 she is widowed, however without a marriage or a maiden name I can't go any further. I have tried various alternative names for Ada, Adela, Adelaide, Adaline,Ida but as she is names as Ada in a will I have to assume that that is her correct name. Amelia is not a very common name either but I have found this puzzle impossible to solve. Three other names that form part of the story they are William H Stocker, Aviott Aganoor and Dr John Mills Probyn. Mr Stocker is a Tailor to lived in London but seems to come from Northumberland, Mr Aganoor was born in Bombay but lived in London and Dr Probyn was born in Bristol but lived in various parts of the country. If anyone has any information regarding Amelia I would love to hear from you. Lesley Lee
