Didn't notice House was in the next column, just it was in brackets. Anyway, some of the baptisms say 'Bird Stuffer', so a Taxidermist.

DET ..........
teh 1911 said father was a Painter, but House was written in the next column.
The marriage certificates just say "Painter"
To me, a Naturalist would mean someone who did botany and zoology, plus probably geology,

I got Harold James Bushell's birth cert, born 18th Aug 1923, South Hackney, his mother Beatrice Elizabeth Bushell, no father named. Trying to find Beatrice now...Could someone please look her up on census 1901 1911 to find family? found a match born in 1891, Hackney with parents Edward Bushell and wife Sarah Ada Huxell? could someone please confirm who she was living with in 1901 and 1911? As I am guessing again.

Thanks JoonieCloonie for your reply, I agree with you about living person's having to apply themselves, I hadn't given it much thought up until now but I wouldn't want any Tom,Dick or Harry having a copy of my birth cert. So I will leave it to my friend if she wants to apply for her birth cert, unlikely though...have searched so many friends and family over the years and still waiting to find one who is as interested in their own family as I am, especially when in comes to spending money!!! As for the search for Harold James Bushell (my neighbour's Grandfather) I will have to give that one up, if I mentioned DNA, she would really think I had lost the plot. I love searching but it can be so frustrating sometimes.

ah, I hadn't paid attention to the part where you said 1968-70 so that must have been it - and somebody at the GRO pulled up the wrong form letter? :-)
yes, for a birth less than 50 years ago they require details like exact date of birth, parents' names, etc, I believe. Personally I have always thought birth certs for living people should be issued only to the person themself (parent if a child) ... but yes, your friend could apply herself in that case anyway.
meanwhile do let us know if you get Harold's birth certificate and we can help
we don't know what relation you are to him ... but if he has living children or grandchildren, especially in the male line, DNA testing might turn up cousins in one or both parents' families and possibly even a lead on his father's surname.

Thanks for the info, I have never asked for a cert for a living person before. That makes sense as to why I have not received the birth cert... but why not say that GRO??? I could quite easily provide any info or indeed get my friend to apply for her own birth cert...

if the person was born in the last 50 years no certificate will be issued without detailed identifying info - could that be it even though they gave a different reason?
it's always wise to check the image of the GRO index page to make sure nothing has been mistranscribed at your source, too
I guess I would have asked the GRO to check their index and see what the problem was ;)

Thanks for all your replies, as I thought, it is a hard task to find his parents. I will get the birth cert to see any info on the mother. Going off track a bit, I mentioned the trouble I had with the GRO before, I requested a birth cert of a friend I found on FreeBMD with all the relevant info I found on screen. After inquiring why I had received a refund and not the copy of the birth cert, I got this reply.. The details you provided did not fully match any potential entries located during a three year search between 1968-1970. Please check the details again (below). Well I did check the details and they are still there as of today.??? I had a conversation with Londonbelle about this at the time and neither of us could come up with a reason why I could not get a copy of the birth cert. Has anyone else had problems like this?

It's unlikely you will find out who his dad was, unless his baptism gives the info. Some priests asked the mum who was the father and recorded it on the baptism record
As others have said you need to buy his birth cert to see who his mum was ,you may then find her on the 1911 census and earlier to see who her family info
