I must confess i'm having a right chuckle discovering that I have both Scottish and Nordic ancestry. Could that explain the red hair? :-)

Wow so much information here, Reinhartsen? This was a step daughter of my great grandparents? I'll check for the pm. It will be interesting to see if I can get solid records for 3 generations for both my paternal and maternal sides.

greyghost thanks for your research, yes you are quite right my grandmother had quite a long name indeed. Margaret Elizabeth Louisa Stella Simms (formerly Hawkins)...having just checked my father's birth certificate you are spot on! It does state 'Dye' formerly Hawkins of 36 Freehold street Hull but that was in 1947.

I can only assume therefore that my grandfather was her second husband (a revelation!)

'Margaret L E S Hawkins born 1920 in the Middlesbrough RD (mmn Cook)' Seems like a very strong likelihood.

Says married 26 years - 5 children were born alive to the marriage, 2 are still living but 3 have died.

Looks like she couldn't decide what to call herself - Margaret L E S or Stella, but note there are 2 surnames, so possibly married previously? And his name is here as SIMS

Hello malyon, yes i think you are absolutely correct. So tonight I have order the marriage license to my great grandparents Frank Simms & Amanda Eliassen and also the birth and death certificate to my grandfather Harry Simms.

Also I recall as a child some 3 decades ago stories that one of my great grandparents was of Scandinavian extract. Perhaps the marriage license might provide some clues?

This is very intriguing indeed. So I know that I have Scottish relations via my maternal grandfather and also some possible Scandinavian links that needs further investigating.

Hello malyon, well that is truly fascinating. Records for my great grandparents???? How deep does this pool go :-) If the certificates pan out for my grandad I think my great grandparents will be the next step. I did say in my initial post, 3 generations seemed like a realistic goal. I note Scottish certificate records appear to offer more stepping stone opportunities.
