I'll have to be careful here when inputting into my family tree as I see I have Hugh twice, sandwiched between James. My greatgrandfather Hugh (George's Dad) and I assume Hugh's grandfather was also called Hugh...

HUGH Frizzell married Anne Wilson in Ballymoney, Co Antrim on 3 Aug 1858.

They had at least 2 children:

** HUGH married Christina Sutherland on 10 Jun 1904

I wondered what happened to Hugh b 1863 in Antrim as I could find no trace of him after 1881.
There is a matching death on SP registered in Greenock
He died in 1883 age 20yrs.

This means that his brother James ( your ancestor) bc 1859 in Antrim was the only surviving male child.

GlasgowLass, you have really lit my curiosity. I inputted this info into the NI registry and figured i would order it-

I wonder if there was a marriage license and what info it might reveal...

I had a look at that 1881 census with Flora Frizzle - she's listed as a widow.

So maybe she is indeed a sister-in-law rather than a sister ???

James Frizzell was the eldest son, born about a year after his parents 1858 marriage.
He married in 1884 and his younger brother died in 1883
Therefore if Flora was a widow, she couldn't have been married to any of Hugh and Anne's children?

An extract of the 1858 marriage can be obtained from Groni for 5 credits (about £2) .
It may provide the name and occupation for the fathers of Hugh and Anne.

Can you look at the 1904 marriage of Hugh and Christina and confirm that BOTH of Hughs parents were deceased at this time.

I think I know why I can't find them at 1901.
It looks like James died 1891 followed by Hessie in 1896.

In 1896 chid named Hugh with a matching profile to their son was sent to Canada as a Quarriers child !
I am certain that it's the same Hugh Frizzell.
He appears in Toronto at 1901 but is not found there afterwards

He must have returned to Greenock before 1904 but I can't find it

GlasgowLass, just having a look now at the marriage certificate for Hugh & Christina 1904. It says Hugh Frizzell a Railway Carter, I wonder what that was? Christina Housekeeper. Parents James Frizzel Sugarhouse Labourer (deceased) Hessie Frizzell/Brown (deceased).

I must say the writing is difficult to understand. Reading cursive writing is becoming a lost art.

That's what I expected and it more or less confirms what I thought
James and Hessie both died within 5yrs of each other leaving Hugh orphaned at around the age of 10 yrs.
Im certain that he was sent to Canada as a Quarriers child.

I can find him going out in 1896 and on the 1901 census in Canada.
I can't find him coming back between 1901 and 1904..

A carter was person who pulled a horse and cart,... or a delivery driver

There is something else and I really don't know if it's relevant.

There was a man named William John Kane Frizzell ( pastry baker) born in Co Antrim circa 1857
He married Matilda Porter Sutherland in Port Glasgow in 1875.
Matilda was also from Co Antrim and can be found on the 1871 census with her parents named John and Ann ( therefore not connected to Christina Sutherland)

This couple lived in Greenock where they had a number of Scots born children before moving back to Ireland and completing their family.
They too lived in Ballymoney.
I think that this man may connect to your family but, I couldn't guarantee it

A treasure trove of information thank you so much. Irish, Scottish, Nordic and some unknown roots too that will likely remain a mystery. This has been truly fascinating. I am awaiting several certificates and no doubt they will help me build a picture of my families varied geographical history. Such a shame Frank Henry Simms is a dead end.

I see James Frizzel was a sugarhouse labourer.

Hi Alviegal, yes that must be my great great grandfather on that list of Sugarhouse labourers. :-)

So a little query about this 1858 marriage license.....I have this feeling, that the X marks indicate the parties were illiterate? Also the cursive writing is hard to understand. Can anyone else make out the Parish, i'm pretty sure it's Antrim County. Although where Balamoney comes into place, no idea?

Yes, it's Antrim.
I can't make out the parish name, but it's not Ballymoney.

I think the parish is Rasharkin, which Wikipedia says is 8 miles south of Ballymoney.
