Hi,
As others have said maybe they weren't married legally in 1851 but tied the knot a bit later. You also mentioned Jane was known as Rebecca so maybe this couple is who you're after??? from FreeBDM. It's always worth looking outside expected dates when you hit a brick wall. Hope this helps.

Marriages Dec 1857
Keersch Hannah Manchester 8d 609
Mendelburg Nathan Manchester 8d 609

Great work, Karin

Lancs BMD confirms who married whom

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1857
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
SOLOMON Joseph SOLOMON Rebecca Manchester, Great Synagogue Archives+, Manchester Central Library 512/1/133

A copy of the cert will give fathers' names.............which are vital

Am I the only one who thinks it odd that children from a Jewish family would be baptised?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 4 Feb 2015 15:42

Didn't realise they had been (missed that info)..........although In the Jewish faith, it's the MOTHER who determines the faith of the children, and Jane was C of E

Thanks Jacqueline.

In regard to the baptism of the children I believe that Jane/Rebecca wasn't Jewish so the children have probably have followed her faith.

I think I may have found Josephs death info for you Kath I certainly hope so!

Thank you everyone for the information which you have found
Karin and Jacqueline, the marriage you have found looks really promising. Thank you sooooooooooo much. I will send for the certificate and let you know

Jane was brought up as a Baptist and although most of the children where christened ,as they grew up ,those that did not have a jewish name took one and often married jewish partners.
It took me a long long time to sort out the children as sometimes they appeared with their given Christian names at others their jewish ones, add to that Solomon gets mis-spelt quite often , it has been quite a challenge so I really do appreciate the boards help

Karin ,the death you have found I will take a look at ,I do have a date for his death but without looking I cannot remember what it is, I will see if it ties in,Thank you

Hi everyone
I have just received the marriage certificate between JOSEPH SOLOMON and REBBECCA SOLOMON.21st October 1857 at Manchester synagogue

I had hoped the Rebecca was my ancestor JANE SIMS as she changed her name to Rebecca when she married Joseph Solomon but I do not think that this is the correct certificate .
It gives Jane/Rebecca's fathers name as ABRAHAM SOLOMON deceased and her father was THOMAS SIMS and he was alive at the time of her marriage.
On the certificate it gives their address as Davison street Manchester.

Could someone please look at the 1861 census to see if they can see a Joseph Solomon b1833 with wife Rebecca Solomon b1829 living in Manchester ?
thank you
