Heard from GRO. They can trace no birth for Frederick Johnson in Newcastle in 1847. I'm waiting for the Birth Certificate for Martha born 1860. Will let you know.

I have found out the Battles that he might have been involved in. The Crimean War was between 1853 and 1856 and the battles are Alma, Balaclava (he served under Lord Lucan), Inkerman, Kurekdem and Sebastopol. I think the dates of the battles coincide with a break in the birth of the children.

Hi Anne
Not sure about Ireland being "abroad". More likely the time he was abroad was in those battles - Sebastapol etc. Worth checking the dates and what other battles happened around that time. That would help identify the one that I couldn't read. It may be that he was aborad when there is a gap of three or four years between children.

Thanks for the information. His service record states he served abroad. would Ireland be classed as abroad even though it was part of the UK at that time?
I will certainly let you know when I receive the birth certificate.
Best wishes

I did my best to read through his army record on Ancestry, I struggled with some of the place names. It doesn't seem to be a complete record just his discharge papers.
"He was with the expedition to the East for 2.5 years and was present at the battles of Alma Balaclava ,,, Ker..arry(?) and siege of Sebastapol. He wears a medal for service in the Crimea with clasps for Alma Balaclava InKernea…(?) and Sebastapol.
His service has been exemplary. He was in possession of 4 good conduct badges when promoted to the rank of Sergeant Wheeler. He wears a silver medal for distinguished service in the field and will receive a gratuity of £10 on discharge. He wears a silver medal for long service and good conduct and will receive a gratuity of £10 on discharge. There is 1 record against him in the Regimental Defaulters Book punished summarily. [He left the service as he was disabled due to chronic rheumatism. Pains in his left side. So he was declared medically unfit for service.] He was 5ft 6.5ins. Fair complexion. Brown hair. Hazel eyes."

If the baptism is right for William in Greenwich his fathers name was William on that.
The marriage to Jane Farmar has his father as a Richard.
It's just a thought but once you have the birth cert please let us know the outcome.
Thanks Mel

The marriage date could be before 1848 ...
Some baptisms:- Jane. Bp 13 Apr 1845 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich. bn 21 Mar 1845. addr: Mulgrave Place. Occ: Wheeler, RHA
Thomas. Bp. 2 Aug 1857 at St Alphege, Greenwich. bn. 13 Jun 1857. addr: Mulgrave Place, Woolwich. Occ: Corporal RHA.
Martha. bp 4 Oct 1860 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich. bn. Oct 1860. addr: 37 George Place. Occ: wheelwright.
I also spotted these two but I'm not sure - mainly because of the occupation - William here shows as a lighterman. William (bn 3 Oct 1851) and Richard (bn 6 Feb 1854) both baptised on 22 Apr 1855. Addr: 18 Marigold Street. Father shows as William Francis Johnson.
Cannot find Frederick (1848), William (1851) (assuming he is not as above) and Hannah (1852) on the London baptisms on Ancestry.

I would say you really need that birth cert that Jacqueline put up for Martha. Then we could possible find the marriage.
There is one here in Northumberland with a father's name of William for a William Johnson and Jane Snowball.
Name: William Johnson Gender: Male Marriage Date: 14 May 1840 Marriage Place: Haltwhistle,Northumberland,England Father: William Johnson Spouse: Jane Snowball FHL Film Number: 252510, 252514
They seemed to move around a lot so the marriage could have been anywhere or even in Ireland as Jane was from there.
You need the birth cert.

I did find most of the census records that are mentioned above. William was a career solider. He joined the Royal Horse Artillery and reached the rank of Sergeant. He was a wheelwright.. He served in a lot of different places including Ireland and the Crimea and I believe he finished his service at Woolwich Arsenal.
Working on the information you provided I have found a baptism record. 28.4.1818, for a Jane Farmer in Kilshannig by Mallow in Cork, father George mother Jane, but again no marriage for Jane and William.
As you suggest I have applied for a birth certificate for Frederick Johnson, their eldest son who was born in Newcastle in about 1847.
Many thanks for your help. I am very grateful.

Frederick seems to be the first child born in Northumberland in 1848.
On the 1861 census William and Hannah were both born in Ireland. Perhaps thats why I can't find them on the 1851 census.
