Yeah I know Jacqueline, dead annoying. The Scottish certificates are much more informative,, Why make it so difficult.. didn't get anywhere with the CWGC I thought it might have given me some more information... I cant even see an enlistment for John Brown at least it would of mentioned his next of kin... Ok guys...Just up... Can anyone tell me what the 10a followed by a number represents ?? I notice a lot of the Pinders start with 10a

Been having a think about Laura Ellen Wells who married a Brown.. It is possible she lied about being married due to her already being pregnant with Ernest Pinder ?? :-D

10a is the GRO Volume number, representing the district in which the event was registered. The next number is the page within that volume

Yes she lied, probably quite often, but we can't really guess at her reasons.

The marriage cert will cost you £9.25 inclusive of postage and answer (we hope) most of the questions you are asking about her

That soldier's effects went to Mrs Harriet Gray, it is difficult to read the relationship to John Brown but after awhile we think what looks like Mosoleleg is Mo - Mother Sole Leg - perhaps sole legatee.

Perhaps you could find that link for John Brown - difficult I know with that name. :-)

It's on Ancestry, they have the effects of all soldiers died in WW1 - really it's what monies are owed I think in wages and a second payment which looks like compensation.

If it's the correct man he was separated from his wife and she'd produced children by someone else so he wouldn't want her to have the money so he'd name another relative.

I think the soldiers were able to name who it was left to. I have gone through all my WW1 deaths and found their effects. It collaborates my other info e.g. wife, parents, siblings. 1 named his mother not father, others named father. Married ones their wives and children named, 1 named his widowed sister who had children rather than parents.

Now Harriet Gray has to be linked with the correct John Brown.

The only Harriet Brown marriage to Mr Gray is the one I posted...and she is way too young to be John's mother (unless he got married when he was about 10 :-) or she gave birth to him when she was about 10 - sorry being facetious!

I can't find a marriage for Thomas Brown to a Harriett either....nor a death that fits Thomas
