i have looked for a birth of andrew spiers but there is only one in 1841 and thats in cheshire so you could be right about andrew using his mothers maiden name there is no marriage to elizabeth

Just been looking at your 14:19 post Maureen and I think you might be onto something to me there appear to be too many coincidences and added to the fact that I'm unable to find Andrew Spires prior to the 1881 census

I'm quite convinced that Andrew left Harriet and took up with Elizabeth M*donald (nee Farmer),changing his name to SPIRES.

A few trees on Ancestry have his mmn as SPIERS so that would make sense. His occupation,age and birth place are spot on in 1881 and 1891. He dies :
