Michael Report 10 Jan 2015 00:51

This has been great. Another family confusion was that Phillip Henry added an S to Meyer at some point. Here is his story

Phillip Henry Meyer was born at Mt Gambier. After some labouring jobs he joined his brothers working on the drainage system around Glencoe. When the brothers decided to come to Kaniva, Phil made the initial trip with George and Jack. He worked with the family and Allots 39 and 35A Parish of Yanipy were transferred to his name from George on 21 March 1903. He applied for Crown grants for the home block on 24 June 1905. It was paid in full on 27 Jan 1905. The other block was paid in full on 7 June 1907.

The block of land that became Phil's had a small house on it that was either destroyed or unlivable. When he married Lily Nash on 10 March 1896 the couple lived in a stripper until they built a house. The Nash family had selected a block on the western side of the Edenhope Road and later moved to a home to the south of where the Meyer family was living.

In 1906 the family moved to the Grong Grong district, NSW. Here Phil took over Wilga Park, a property of 1500 acres. The property was bought with brother George having an interest in it, he kept the books for the property. When the deeds were drawn up for the property an "S" was added to the Meyer surname of Phil as was always used by his brother George. It was always used after that.

The trip to NSW was made via Melbourne by horse and cart. Phil and six children made one trip. Lily and her maid made another. Both parties stayed over at Tom and Eliza Tilley's. The blocks at Yanipy were sold to brother George in 1914.

Phil and his family worked hard clearing and farming with horse teams. There was a saw mill on the far end of the property. About 1917 a big bush fire swept through the property during harvest time.

Phillip and Lily had two more children after they came to Grong Grong. An old hut was used as a school. It was later moved over to the boundary fence and became a subsidised school. Their children and the Lava family attended. A Miss Meridith was the teacher. Later some of the Meyers family attended Landervale School on an adjoining property. The younger members finally went to the Bullock Tank Public School.

Somewhere about 1930 Philip and Lily moved from Wilga Park to retire at Elwin St in Narrandera. In 1946 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Phillip passed away 11 November 1950 and Lily passed 29 October 1953.

Death - from the Narrandera Argus Tuesday 14 Nov 1950

As briefly mentioned in Friday's issue, the death occurred in the Narrandera District Hospital on Thursday last of an old and respected resident of the Narrandera and Grong Grong districts. Mr Phillip Henry Meyers at the age of 80 years.

Mr Meyers was a native of Mount Gambier, South Australia for about 19 years before going to Victoria, where he carried on his trade as a builder for 24 years. He was married at Kaniva (Victoria). His attention was directed to New South Wales, and he acquired a farm at Grong Grong, where he carried on farming operations until about 14 years ago, when he came to Narrandera. In his days of retirement he greatly enjoyed visiting friends and exchanging reminiscences.

Mr Meyers is survived by his wife and a family of four sons and three daughters. The sons are Roy Meyers (Grong Grong), Sidney (Cowra), James (Goulburn), and Edward (Wagga), while the daughters are Lily (Mrs H McGrath, Grong Grong), Martha (Mrs R Trevaskis, Tatura, Victoria) and Alice (Mrs J P Brennan, Wagga). A daughter (Phyllis) predeceased him.

The funeral took place on Friday last after a service had been conducted in the Methodist Church by the Rev. A A Parsons, who also officiated at the graveside in the Methodist portion of the Narrandera cemetery. The bearers were four sons, Roy, Sid, Edward and James Meyers, and the floral tray carriers were Messrs Bob Meyers and JP Brennan. Watkins Bros had charge of the funeral arrangements.

Death of Edward Ellis Meyer -

I am also researching the Meyers family from Mount Gambier. I have a copy of the death certificate of Edward Meyer who died at Mount Gambier on 14th July 1918. He was 83 years old (born 1835) and came from Hanover via Hamburg, Germany in about 1856. I don't believe he is related to your Edward Ellis Meyer who obviously came from Yorkshire. Gerry Nicholson previously of Mount Gambier, South Australia.

Just a thought - maybe the 1827 for Edward Ellis' birth has come from someone mistranscribing an old-fashioned 1 as a 7! :D

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 9 Jan 2015 06:59

This page mentions a Meyer Meyer of London, who is a a Fur Manufacturing Merchant, b. c1815. Possibly an older brother to Edward Ellis?

Are you sure Edward Ellis was born in Yorkshire?

I am wondering if he was born in Germany, Denmark or Prussia or maybe even the Netherlands? And then the family moved to England and lived in London/Yorkshire?

Michael
