Hi all,

His death was registered by his daughter in law (William Francis' wife Mary Ann) September 1858. He was buried in Southampton (Old) Cemetery in Sep 1858 as well. His age was given as 81, so 1858-81 = 1777. I guess that's where the 1777 comes from anyway. I think he was buried in a pauper's grave with about 5 other people.

I've not found him in the 1851 census either. Although at the time of his death he was living at 8 or 9 Westgate Street, Southampton.

Don't forget there were two Masters families in Southampton at the time!!

Thanks BeverleyW. That's strange.

Alviegal, familysearch has this for 1851

Name: William Masters
Age: 69
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Southampton, Hampshire
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Schedule Type: Household

but I can't find the entry anywhere else either. :-S

BeverleyW Report 29 Dec 2014 21:28

There will be several more children around somewhere; if they got married in 1802, they certainly didn't wait till 1817 to start a family!

I think the William in Whippingham is a different family. there is also a William Masters aged 69 in Southampton in 1851.

What makes you think he was born 1777 please and are you sure the death for him is correct? Not finding him in 1851.

Hi,

Thanks for the response and for having a look.

I've just had a look and Whippingham is on the Isle of Wight. Plausible I suppose.

Thanks again,

Russell

Laurena Report 29 Dec 2014 21:01

Hi,

I am using my mum's account to post this I hope that's ok. This is my first post so please bear with me!

I've recently got in to family history and have been given a lot of information by relatives who have done a lot of research before me - There seems to be a dead end when it comes to my great x5 grandfather.

Here's what I know:

He was called William Masters, and was born about 1777 (although on the 1841 census it says he's 60 because the age is rounded)
He can be found on the 1841 census living in Southampton, with his wife Frances (also known as Fanny, maiden name Boyce/Boys) and they had two children, William Francis and George Eves(?) Masters.
They lived in Southampton, Hampshire. He was a blacksmith and farrier.
He was married in Southampton, and he died in Southampton in 1858.

I have searched and cannot find his parents but would love to know who they are!

There were two Masters families living in Southampton in the 1800s.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,

Russell
