Thank you for all this. I did know about William Thomas' children as Mary Eliz was my Grandmother, but not that both he & his father were in the army. Was his father (John) also born in India then? No record of W T's death? The Irish connection must go back a very long way then. Is there any way of finding out when the children left India for UK & what happened to them & their families? I obviously know about my side and also Evy Coles side & that some of the others came to UK as there are family photos, but I can't trace them in records. Many thanks

Thanks so much for this extra information. I knew they had 3 children, 1 son & 2 daughters, one called Pamela, presumably the Mrs P Cobs above, as I have a photo of her. So my aunt obviously came back to England after her husband died. Very grateful for all the looking you are doing for me.

Inez, I have found a marriage for Pamela to a Coles so Cobs is possibly an error. The initials of the son is also an error as the tree I referred to has him as A A J not R A J.

I don't think that is the right Lillian (Lily) Scott as I have a photo supposedly of her in UK in 1926. I have Esther's married name as Parsous, not Parsons, so maybe that's why I haven't got anywhere - all the other names are the same. Yes, that sounds like William John. I had never know my Grandmother had a brother until recently, but if he died young, that's probably why. Information I have for the last sister I know of, Emma Edith, is that she married a James Burgan in India. Possibly the same person who had several sons born in UK.

I'm late joining this thread and don't want to confuse things, but wanted to mention that the baptism put up earlier (pasted below), gives William's parents as John and Mary.
However, on the military record that was put up for him, there is a document included before his marriage (where his age is given as 14 years and 7mths) which states he was born Seetang, Burmah, and his next of Kin is given as Mother SARAH, Bangalore.
Baptism First name(s) William Thomas Last name Weller Baptism year 1857 Birth year 1857 Place Rangoon Presidency Bengal Mother's first name(s) Mary Mother's last name - Father's first name(s) John Father's last name Weller Baptism date 13 Nov 1857 Birth date 04 Aug 1857 Archive reference N-1-92 Folio 826

Ah, thank you. Obviously not the same person then. This is what I find so confusing when there are several people with the same name in the same place!

Very interesting. So G/Grandfather did something wrong - that was never mentioned! I have a horrid suspicion that my G/father did too. I am in touch with relatives of Edith Coles but didn't know that they went back to India in 1915. Strange in the middle of WW1. Wonder when they came back to UK. Think there were 2 more children after Jenny (Jennet). Thanks so much.
