Thanks all I've seen mention of the 'Lisnaskea' birth Thanks Maddie :) Will do as Potty suggests (another mince pie taken out of this years budget!) And yes his previous service is a bit of a mystery Where did you get the 'employment history bit from Maddie? He is listed as a 'plate layer' Great find :) I definitely hadn't seen anything on that before Pity I waited until any family who might have known anything specific had gone but, fairly typical I think :( Oh my sister thinks his dad was from Dunfirmline (only the other side of Scotland!) but she was told that 50 years ago so isn't that sure it is right now I've told her what I have found out.... :-D :-D :-D Many thanks to all and virtual drinks n mince pies too also

Paging through the Service Record, he appears to have originally enlisted on 14th June 1901.

I have tried to look at the birth reg on GRONI but nothing is coming up.
From this on his Service record that he had served in the Army before: "8 years Colour Service Garrison; 4 years reserve."
Perhaps we can find his previous Army record.

If you want to check the birth that Maddie posted, try this site - it isn't free but not too expensive:
http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/archive-for-family-and-local-history
Click on Research family history at GRONI then click on Go to GRONI online.
You have to register and buy credits; up to 200; credits cost 40p and 5 paid for a view of an original death entry. You cannot print or download the image. The certs can be ordered on line for £8.
Not quite as good or cheap as scotlandspeople but a step in the right direction.

Hi pepes Hit a brick wall with my paternal grandfather using ancestry co uk site I have his WW1 pension records in those he states born in: Aghavea, Enniskillen, Fermanagh - January 1881
BUT his census return from 1911 (Old Mill Cottages, St Fagans, Glamorgan) (which has his last name mis-transcribed as McLorley!) shows him born in: Dumbarton 1884
Now the census is definitely him as, he was living next door to his wife to be (in June that year!) Elizabeth Roberts And the service record is him as it has their home address and details of Elizabeth & their children
I've checked as much as I can think of (although I haven't as yet done any 'pay to view' Scottish or Irish sites yet as I've spent loads getting the birth, marriage & death certs that I've used to trace the family so far, from the GRO!!! :-S
If any one wants to contact me I can supply pictures of the above items to see if they can work out anything I'm missing.....
Blwddy Family Tree hobies, now who was it who said it was fun AND relaxing! gggrrrrrr ;-)
