Hi CHris Ho that is who I thought was Harry's father too it got me confused . Charles E and JAmes Alfred Burton his brother both had a sons and both called them Harry JAmes Burton .Charles E son Harry James was born 1883 and James Alfred son also Harry James Burton was born in 1886 ish .I wonder if the brothers had a brother maybe who died and they both named their sons in honour of him seems strange that they would both call their sons the same name TBH :-S x

Jayne, have added this from further down page, in case you got confused, James was Uncle of Harry!...perhaps he and Emma 'took her in', a lot of Deaths around that time.

Hi Chris ho yes her mother died when she was 9 /10 years old then she went to live at some point with her grandparents JAmes and Emma they died the same year as my nan married .but she never spoke about her dad Harry James except to say when she moved to Coventry during the war she contacted Chelmsford police and they found him living in the Chelmsford area and he had remarried with children he then contacted my nan asking her for money ! She never had any more contact with him ? I think from reading the newspaper report on here he may have been a rogue would love to know his movements from 1921 onwards when Alice his wife died and why my nan lived with his parents and not her father ! Very strange indeed !

Would be worth getting Harry and Alice Marriage Cert., when you can, for your collection!, looks like Gladys was perhaps lodging/living with James and Emma, a sad time, as Emma dies later 1931, same quarter as Wedding.

So very pleased that your Mum and Auntie are happy. It's good to find that our ancestors who lost their Mum were reared by family. My Gran had a sister who died in 1911 leaving 3 children under 5 years of age. She had already buried her husband and two of her 5 children. Her girls were raised by Gran's Older sisters and I was lucky enough to know one of them especially and still keep in touch with Gran's nieces and Grandnieces.

Just as well you're not searching Scottish roots then Jayne. OHs great grandfather had 4 brothers and everyone one of them named their second daughter for his mother, including her maiden surname as a middle name!

Thomas Harris was born in Chelmsford, one of nineteen children. He worked at Crompton’s for nine years, married in January 1917 and joined the army. He was killed in action in October 1918. Aged 23, Thomas married Kate Emma Burton on 20th January 1917 at Chelmsford Cathedral. At the time he was a clerk, living at 52 South Primrose Hill (the same property as in 1901, but renumbered). His 20 year-old bride was the daughter of the moulder James Alfred Burton, and lived at 45 Townfield Street, Chelmsford.
