Sarah "Thank you for looking on SP for me hey jude. Really appreciate that and did not expect anyone to use their own credits for this. How can I repay you?"

No worries - I normally buy a batch of credits each month or so as I have 25% Scottish ancestors. These were just sitting there so don't worry - my pleasure!

As I say, I can't see that ANY of the children were baptised. However, thinking out loud....there is a huge age span between the "children" and I wonder if perhaps the younger ones were grandchildren rather than children (even though Margaret would have been old enough)

These are Nairn births 1830 to 1850 in Wigtownshire

09/05/1846 NAIRN ALEXANDER GORDO ALEXANDER NAIRN/JANE GORDON FR122 (FR122) M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0020 0047
2 27/04/1850 NAIRN JAMES ALEXANDER NAIRN/JANE GORDON FR120 (FR120) M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0020 0047
3 14/04/1848 NAIRN JOHN GORDON ALEXANDER NAIRN/JANE GORDON FR122 (FR122) M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0020 0047
4 04/07/1844 NAIRN WILLIAM ALEXANDER NAIRN/JANE GORDON FR122 (FR122) M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0020 0047

Who knows if they are relevant (i.e. whether the Alexander is the same one) but no children of Alexander and Margaret...looking at Chirs' post we may have TWO separate Alexanders....which the births above would confirm

This is Gordon Nairn from Chris' post above I think

1858 NAIRN GORDON M WHITHORN /WIGTOWN 900/00 0040

SylviaInCanada Report 31 Aug 2014 21:56

well, registration of bmds did not start in Scotland until 1855, I believe

so yes, you are looking for a Baptism record.

I'm not sure ............... but have you tried searching on familysearch, the Mormon site?

Sarah

Sarah Report 31 Aug 2014 21:32

Interesting that hey jude could find no record of James Nairn's birth on Scotland's People. What would you good people suggest I do next? Is the only other way to find the record to go to Wigtiwnnshire in person and search the church records?

Sarah

Sarah Report 31 Aug 2014 21:27

Thank you Chris. I am already familiar with Papers Past.

Have had a play on SP and not really getting anywhere...have downloaded that 1851 census and the marriage of Alexander and Margaret - she was a McConnell - if you want these let me know and I will pm them. Not going to waste any more credits at the mo - no James Nairn (with parents Alexander and Margaret) born in Wigtownshire in the right time scale as far as I can see

you're very welcome.

Hope you find something on Scotland's People

Sarah

Sarah Report 31 Aug 2014 05:48

Yes that is myJames Nairn thanks Sylvia. I had found those records already.
Agree with you that the "headmaster" reference appears to be incorrect. Jessie died in 1956 so must have written that piece earlier than that date. Her daughter would have supplied it for publication in 1976.
Looks like I need to get onto Scotlands People to find a birth record for James Nairn.
I also have photos of family graves in Wigtiwnshire, and transcriptions of those grave stones.
Really appreciate your help. :-)

Sarah .......................

remember that what Jessie Clark wrote was largely hearsay by 1976 and passed down family stories ..................

this means that there could be some errors in it.

I can't help you with GR records ............... I have never used them at all.

However, I do know that Scottish registration of births did not start until about 1855 ................ England and Wales began on July 1 1837.

You would have to look for Parish records of baptisms for these guys

I use ancestry .......................... but the full Scottish censuses (ie ability to look at the image and see what is actually on there) and bmd information are only available on Scotland's People.

Scotland's People is a "buy credits only" site ............. there are no subscriptions to it.

I gather it is possible to search for free, and see if the name is there, but then you have to buy the credits ................ I think someone said the other week that it was 5 credits to look at a record, but don't quote me on that :-).

I'm afraid that is where you are going to have to look, and decide how much you want to pay ................... helpers usually do not spend their own money on buying credits, although you may find someone kind enough to use a few credits that they have left and that have to be used by a certain date .................... however, wait until that is offered to you!

All of this doesn't explain why the lads were in Corwall or give us the name of the ship(s) they travelled on, but it is slowly building up a picture...

Sarah

Sarah Report 31 Aug 2014 00:29

Stewart Newall's birthplace, (according to the encyclopedia of NZ) was Durisdeer which is in Dumfries which isn't too far from Whithorn where James Nairn came from. It is also not far from Glasgow where some of the Whithorn Nairns migrated to looking for work. Stewart Newall's father is listed as still being in that area in the 1881 census.

Sarah

Sarah Report 31 Aug 2014 00:19

I have just tried to do a birth search for Stewart Newall and only got results for England and Wales. I 'm sure I have seen a link to Scottish records on Genes Reunited but can't find it now. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Sarah

Sarah Report 30 Aug 2014 22:32

I have just discovered that the Encyclopedia of NZ item about Newall has a note on sources which cite "diaries 1863-1901"
I shall see if I can source these. :-)
