Re: "have her full name as Victoria, Maria, Clementine Shorten" I'm assuming (without any idea of its truth) that her name was Victoria de Vocht. I know in England, abt 3% of marrs are between 1st cousins, and abt 25% of those are children of 2 brothers, so have the same surnames. but it is unusual (it happened once in my family, though)..
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/land/land-grants-western-canada-1870-1930/Pages/land-grants-western-canada.aspx Name:Harry DeVocht Part:NW Section:30 Township:16 Range:12 Meridian:W2 Folio:117 Liber:907 Microfilm Reel Number:C-6669 Item Number:73739 The above indicates Harry paid his $10 filing fee, and filed a homestead claim. He had to live on his land 6m of the year, erect a dwelling, and get 30 acres under crop. Noe I know: LIBER DATES REEL NUMBER 907 July 16, 1921 - Aug. 02, 1921 C-6669 So Harry proved his claim (i.e., complied with the requirements), and was granted letters patent (i.e., title) in the summer of 1921. He got 160 acres identified as S30NW T16 R12 W2M on the Dominion Survey.
Land on the prairies is identified by a grid system. Township measures the northing in 6 m chunks from the US border, and Range masures the (usually) westing from the meridian to the east in 6 m chunks (from the 2nd meridian or longitude 102deg W here; 3rd M=106deg; 4th M=110deg=AB-SK border). Within the 6 x 6 m block so defined, there are 36 sections numbered in an odd (but consistent) way, so S31 is in the NW corner and S30 is immediately S of that). Each section is divided into quarters - Harry claimed the NW quarter of his section, which was 9m W and 11 m N of the Montmartre PO. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Land_Survey#Sections for how sections are numbered.

Settlement in Ontario followed a different pattern. After the American Revolution, Britain was anxious to populate possible US invasion routes. Mostly, the crown sold land for settlement, but land was given free to Revolutionary refugees, and also to former British veterans of that war, and of the war of 1812. Britain also sold land cheap to former servicemen, as they would be useful additions to the militia. Counties were divided into townships of abt 80sq m. There was more of a sense of urgency than with the prairie survey, so townships were surveyed individually, or in groups of 2-4, and as soon as the survey was done, land was opened for settlement. A township was usually split into 1.25 m wide concession strips, and the strip divided into 0.25m wide lots, so a full lot would be 200 acres, but they were usually split into halves. Conditions (soil-weather) were better in Ontario than the prairies, so 100ac usually made a viable farm. Homesteading requirements usually called for a larger %-age of land under crop, but the land was often forested, so clearing the land was a lot tougher (but timber gave a useful income source), so time to prove was often 10y.
There is no obvious way to identify a given lot without a map, but fortunately, concession maps are online for S Ont at: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/Countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php
A word of caution - maps are note always oriented in the standard way, and sometimes there's no compass rose, so pay attention to orientation as you drill down at this site. http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/Countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/elg-m-bayham.jpg does have a compass rose, and N is at the right-hand edge.
The site also lists some grants given to Firby's.

LAC are digitizing WW1 service records - Shorten is near the end of the alphabet, so it'll be abt a year for these guys, but come back later and there should be a free link to the WW1 service record.
Once you know Arthur's unit for sure, you can check that unit's War Diaries. Most arty batts didn't keep WDs - that would be done at the brigade level. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/020152_e.html

Go to http://maps.google.com/ and look up Shorten Lake, Division No. 18, Unorganized, SK It's abt 10 m from SK's N boundary (i.e.,abt the same latitude as the S tip of the Mainland in Shetland), and abt 70m from the AB-SK border.
Alt: go to http://www.sasksearch.com/maps/remembrance.php This page was created on November 10, 2006 and honours those Saskatchewan residents killed in service of Canada during WWII and Korea. In addition 11 who received the Victoria Cross are also honoured. [To honour its war dead, SK decided to name some geographic feature after them - usually, it's a lake as SK has thousands of those.]
