Help!! I am trying to find details of the life of Isabelle Mackenzie,b. 1826. married George Ross in 1849 in the old school house in Nigg. George was b.about 1826 in Edinburgh parish and is described as a stone cutter or mason. They had at least 7-8 children and by 1881 were in the census for Edinborough. We know nothing of either family. Also my gggrandfather, John Lindsay. Married Margaret Eggo and lived in Cortachy,Clova and Angus. Margaret was baptised in z,1783. Of either the Lindsay or the Eggo we know nothing. William Graham b. 1856 in Ayr and married a Martha Craig. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you all. Ann Ross

Apart from a large number of Alexander Ross deaths 1820-41, which would mean spending a lot of credits to view the parents' names on all the records, there's this possibility below, but almost impossible to know if he's the right one or not. Interestingly, he's a bookbinder!
1851 Scotland Census about Alexander Ross Name: Alexander Ross Age: 31 Estimated birth year: abt 1820 Relationship: Head Spouse: Isabella Ross Gender: Male Where born: Edinburgh Parish Number: 821 Civil Parish: Dumfries Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Maps: View related Ecclesiastical Parish County: Dumfriesshire Address: Friars Vennel Occupation: Bookbinder ED: 5 Page: 7 Household schedule number: 28/2 LINE: 13 Roll: CSSCT1851_206 Household Members: Name Age Alexander Ross 31 Isabella Ross 32 James W Ross 2
As Isabella was born in Morton, Dumfries-shire, this would be their marriage. His father's name might perhaps be on the image, but info on old parish records (pre 1855) tends to be minimal. 30/11/1847 ROSS ALEXANDER ISABELLA WALLACE/FR348 (FR348) M MORTON /DUMFRIES 843/00 0020 0170

Hi Alviegal, Yes you have the correct family, Duncan Ross (1) born 1824, d. 1825. Duncan Ross(2) was my G.G.Grandfather he was born to Hugh & Isabella 1828 and Married Sarah Ann Whyte in 1856 at Woolwich, he died in India 1862 of Rabies. The Alexander Ross b. 1820 is the only person I have never been able to find and I am wondering if maybe he died as a child. Thank you for your help. Regards, Syd

I think this was confirmed as the 1851 for Hugh and William? The occupation is not bookbinder though. Of course, he could have become one in the 9 years before he signed up, if that is his service record.

If he didn't die in 1880, and if he was a bookbinder before joining the army, I wonder if this could be him in 1891, in a vaguely related job?
1891 Scotland Census about William Ross Name: William Ross Age: 60 Estimated birth year: abt 1831 Relationship: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Edinr, Midlothian Registration Number: 685/4 Registration district: St Giles Civil Parish: Edinburgh New North County: Midlothian Address: 13 Blair Street Occupation: Printer Compositor <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ED: 15 Household schedule number: 46 LINE: 7 Roll: CSSCT1891_350 Household Members: Name Age Alexander Fowler 59 Catherine Fowler 60 Mary G Fowler 22 John Brown 60 Frank Buchanan 44 William Ross 60 (and lots of other lodgers)
And maybe in 1881, though the age is a few years out:
1881 Scotland Census about William Ross Name: William Ross Age: 52 Estimated birth year: abt 1829 Relationship: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Edinburgh Registration Number: 424 Registration district: Dunfermline Civil Parish: Dunfermline Town: Dunfermline County: Fife Occupation: Printer Compositor <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ED: 10 Household schedule number: 248 LINE: 7 Roll: cssct1881_117 Household Members: Name Age George Clark 78 Margaret Clark 78 William Ross 52

The 1871 which William has already identified, and which I posted for our reference, is the correct one, with William living with his sister Catherine and her husband Andrew.
But the gunner from Leith may well be the one who died in 1880. If you view the image on SP, Syd, you'll find out whether it's your William who died, or some other William Ross.
The military record you found, Alviegal, re the man who was discharged in 1875, seems very likely the right one.

"Prinde Wife 103rd Rginergpet." is one of the mistranscriptions I mentioned, Syd.
If you look at the version of the 1871 census record posted by alviegal, it reads: Private A M 103rd Regiment Of Foot

I wonder if this is him? He was a bookbinder, enlisted in Gravesend, Kent in 1860. Arrived in India in 1863 and was treated quite a few times for the effects of malaria. His medical record seems to read :Parkhurst? 6.2.71 (when he arrived) revaccinated 21 April 1871 then Aldershot? 25.6.72 (when he arrived) conjunctivitis between 9 Oct and 12 Nov 1872. He had completed 12 years service. He was discharged in 1875 in Devonport. He was unfit due to impaired vision.

This is him in 1871, which you have already found. Some mistranscription in this Ancestry version.
It implies Catherine was his daughter, not his sister, although that must be another mistranscription, judging by their ages.
He's a soldier in 1871, so could have been away with his regiment in later years?
