Up until a couple of weeks ago I thought my grandfather served in the Royal Horse Artillary during ww1, he too had a common name and couldn't really find one that fitted.

Then Find my past added some new records for men that re-joined after the war....turns out he was in the Suffolk reg RFA.....So the stories about the RHA that were past down were wrong....plus I would never had thought of looking at Suffolk when he lived London/Essex area

If you can find him on the Absent Voters list for 1918, that should give you his Regt No. That list doesn't seem to be on line but this site gives some info on where to find it:
