John (Graham) Messenger seems to change jobs often - on the 1871 he's a mariner, on the 1881 a stonemason and in 1891 he's a labourer. |

Jean, are you sure about that 1873 birth year? |

My Grandmother is Ann Messenger born 5th May 1873, . if she isent John Messenger's child, she may just have taken his name, which some times did happen. |

Thought that Samuel Messenger was John Messengers son and not Margaret's as she would have been to young to have an 18 yr' old son, in 1881, also he had been born in America, so maybe , John Messenger had been married to some else over there ? like you said I think it is a case for Miss Marples. |

I was wondering about this birth also, given the location on the 1871: |

I looked at that one MC. I thought it was Js perhaps meant to be Jas. |

I'd say that was a good contender Rootgather. |

I had been looking along those lines too rootgatherer i.e. Mr. Edmond(s) being a stepfather but I have not been able to find anything to substantiate this theory. |

Perhaps clutching at straws here. I am wondering if James was born a McKay and Edmonds was a stepfather's name he had taken? It is unusual for most of his children to have McKay as a middle name. |

Yes, I think we can eliminate that family too MC. |

I did look at those Scottish census that Rootgatherer posted but wasn't too sure about them as James seems to be consistent with his birth year 1869/70 on marriage and 1901 & 1911 census, also birthplace of Wishaw. Father stated on marriage as an engineer. |
