I had thought it was a medal for a race - ie - running - but if not, then maybe it was Flora's husband George who won whatever it was.

Catfr2009

Catfr2009 Report 10 May 2014 23:16

Detroit is definitely a link because we have a medal of some sort with his name on it .. Longest train journey or something, can't remember offhand though!

The death in 1920 is certainly her as the Cathcart area is stated on her death certificate!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 23:09

There's this, with no other information on the image.
There's a similar record of a George McFarlane going to Detroit in 1917.
Probably nothing to do with the George who won the race.

Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905-1957 about George Mcfarlane
Name: George Mcfarlane
Arrival Date: 16 Jan 1920

Port of Arrival: Detroit, Michigan

Microfilm Roll Number: M1478_59

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 23:05

Flora's death;

1920 MCFARLANE FLORA BAXTER F 73 CATHCART (LANARK) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 633/0B 0303

Maybe George went to Detroit after her death.

EDIT:

No, he'd have been too old to run in a race, as rootgatherer has already pointed out.

EDIT AGAIN:
but see Catfr2009's reply below - not running, apparently, so maybe it was him after all.

It could be that the name Carruthers came from the next generation back.
In the case of my grandfather his middle name was not his mother's maiden name but his grandmother's.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 22:53

From the info in 1891 and 1901 censuses, this will be Jane's father's birth. Still no clue as to the reason for the name Carruthers - thought it might have been his mother's ms, but no!

17/01/1832 MCFARLAN GEORGE JAMES MCFARLAN/ELISABETH BELL FR364 (FR364) M KILMARTIN /ARGYLL

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 22:41

EDIT: This is not the right Flora (see her marriage cert details in a later post below) . The correct Flora was born in Argyll.

This is the only Flora Baxter born in Renfrewshire 1845 - 68.
You'd have to buy credits on SP and view her marriage cert, to see if this is the right one, per parents' names.

28/07/1850 BAXTER FLORA MALCOLM BAXTER/EUPHEMIA GALBRAITH FR2414 (FR2414) F ABBEY /RENFREW 559/00 0070 0449

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 22:34

Jane's parents' marriage:

1885 MCFARLANE GEORGE BAXTER FLORA GREENOCK EAST /RENFREW 564/02 0060

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 10 May 2014 22:28

Jane's birth:

1887 MCFARLANE JANE CARRUTHERS F WEST KILBRIDE /AYR 620/00 0062

The name Carruthers is therefore nothing to do with George's father.

ADDED:
Born 7th Sept 1887, to George McFarlane, working joiner, and Flora McFarlane, ms Baxter.
Parents were married June 18th 1885, in Greenock.

All those records are right! Interesting to see the Carruthers bit.... Could that be potentially her changing her name to George's possible father to get rid of the stigma of having an illegitimate child??

Jane's father would have been in his 80s in 1920. Perhaps the medal belonged to another relative?

Could Jane have claimed poor relief when she had her son? I am not sure when the records go up to but many have survived for the Glasgow area and are held at The Mitchell Library. They have been indexed.

EDIT

Mitchell Poor Relief Records

Glasgow City Archives hold registers for the following areas:
Glasgow, 1851-1948
Barony, 1861-1898 (part of Glasgow from 1899)
Govan, 1876-1930 (part of Glasgow from 1930)
Bute, West Dunbartonshire, South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire (not Paisley), often dating from 1845

A return of the most destitute families and individuals within the police jurisdiction of Glasgow was prepared by the Police Superintendent, 1841, and can be viewed in the archives search room.

When visiting the archives search room, you can access databases of applications for Glasgow, Barony and Govan to c.1925 and for the County Council areas up to 1900.

Records are generally closed for 100 years for children and 75 years for adults.

Mother in law says she can't find his birth certificate so we'll have to order it annoyingly! The Carruthers is from Jane's death cert - She is Jane Carruthers McFarlane... None of us knew about that!

Jane's parents were George and Flora. Jane was born in West Kilbride with her brother Neil born the year before in 1887. It appears that George (1919) is the only one to be born in Glasgow....

Yes

The first line says (A) Carruthers- Corp RASC – rank Pte – Reg no M2/034855
2nd line says (B) George – Corp RFC – rank and reg no left blank

According to Wiki, the RFC started off life as an arm of the British Army (hence the Royal Army Service Corps designation) until it merged Royal Naval Air Service on 1 Apr 1918 to form the RAF.

The 1918 date is probably too simplistic!

Can you give us the names of Jane's parents please? Did she live in Glasgow? What address is given for her on George's birth certificate please?

Jane would have been old enough to vote by 1918. Have you checked out the voters rolls please?
