Hello Dea
You have the right 1861 census.
In 1871 they are in Green Street, Deritend, Aston with additional children Hubert (8), Elizabeth (7). Francis (5), Margaret (3), Rose (2 months).
In 1881 they are in the same place, but Hugh has died (so has baby Rose).
Name: Catherine Gallagher Age: 46 Estimated birth year: abt 1835 Relationship to Head: Head Gender: Female Where born: Rosscommon, Ireland Civil Parish: Aston County/Island: Warwickshire Country: England Street address: 21 Green Street Marital Status: Windower (Widower) Occupation: No Trade Registration district: Aston Sub-registration district: Deritend ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 3012 Folio: 119 Page Number: 3 Household Members: Name Age Catherine Gallagher 46 Mary Ann Gallagher 25 Sarah Gallagher 23 Catherine Gallagher 20 Hubert Gallagher 18 Elizabeth Gallagher 17 Francis Gallagher 15 Margarett Gallagher 13
I don't have Catherine junior's birth certificate. She is registered as GALAGHER .
I have a very faint copy of Catherine senior's marriage certificate, dated 24th July 1854 in St. Peter's, Birmingham. Hugh Gallagher aged 23 a labourer, father Michael Gallagher, labourer Catherine HAGGART aged 22 father Patrick Haggart a weaver. I'm afraid the witnesses' names are not clear enough to read on the photocopy but they are definitely not Gallagher, Haggart, Hagan or anything like.
I think this is a hopeless task given the discrepancy in spelling of the names. I only resurrected this branch of the family because of the curious reference to Hagan on Catherine's christening certificate - I have never been convinced that Haggart was her mother's true surname. I can't even find all the children on FreeBmd let alone on familysearch.
If Hagan = Haggart, it's another possibility that the mysterious Bridget was Catherine senior's sister, but that's another impossible task!
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Beverley,
Could you please give us all the details from that 1854 marriage cert, including witnesses.
Do you have this couple on any census that we could look at?
Thanks,
Dea x

Hmm it's a needle in a haystack job indeed. There are two deaths for an Ann Hagan in Birmingham in the right timescale but no marriage fro John with a Bridget that I can see. It would help if I could find christening records for some more of Hugh and Catherine's children but no luck with that either. Thanks anyway.

Patchem thanks for your interest.
I have long been on the track of Catherine Gallagher's parents, Hugh and Catherine, born in Ireland but married in Birmingham in 1854. Catherine senior's maiden name on the marriage cert. is HAGGART, father Patrick, but I have never been able to find any Haggarts in Roscommon. I got the christening certificate of Hugh and Catherine's daughter Catherine junior, my great-great grandmother recently and saw that the mother's name was stated to be Catherine Gallagher née Hagan and the godmother was Bridget Hagan. Catherine was illiterate so wouldn't know if her name was spelled correctly or not.
There is only one Bridget Hagan in Birmingham in 1861 as far as I can see, the wife of John as posted above.
If Catherine Sr. was a Hagan, she would presumably be related to John Hagan rather than Bridget.
It is a very fanciful long shot to be looking at this family but this is my longest-standing brick wall and any chance of knocking a hole in it is worth investigating.
I cannot see a birth for a Thomas Hagan in Birmingham around 1848 and only the Mary Hagan (with no middle name) in 1845 who you already found.
Thank you safc, I'm not so sure about that 1871, the ages are way out. Is there an occupation for John?
There are so many possible mis-spellings, Hagen, Hagon, Haggen etc. and it's only whistling in the wind anyway but I would love to crack this puzzle.
Thanks for looking!
Beverley
PS Have to sign off now but will check back in the morning.

As no-one has yet found them in 1851 I am assuming they are not obvious under the information from 1861.
Have you found possible births for Mary and Thomas in Birmingham?
What other reason have you for choosing that family in the census in 1861?
Thank-you
Added: just as a possible: Mary Hagan Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1845 Registration district: Birmingham Inferred County: Warwickshire Volume: 16 Page: 337

Hello
I have this family in 1861:
Piece: RG9/2150 Place: St Philip -Warwickshire Enumeration District: 6 Civil Parish: Birmingham Ecclesiastical Parish: St Jude Folio: 15 Page: 24 Schedule: 103c Address: 4 Hse 5 1/2 Crt Old Inkleys
HAGAN John Head M M 53 Bricklayer Ireland - - HAGAN Bridget Wife M F 53 Ireland - - HAGAN Mary A. Dau U F 16 Button Maker Warwickshire - Birmingham HAGAN Thomas Son U M 13 Caster Warwickshire - Birmingham
I wonder if anyone can find them for me in 1851 and 1871, please. Bridget Hagan possibly died in 1870 in which case obviously will not be on the 1871.
I am trying to find a connection with Catherine Gallagher née Hagan; a Bridget Hagan was the godmother of Catherine's daughter Catherine at her christening in 1860 according to the certificate from the church.
Thank you Beverley
