Many thanks to you all for this information. I know that Edmund Snr. was still living in
1886, but when this daughter Emma married for a second time to James Pantling in 1911 he was recorded on the marriage certificate as deceased.

He had left Eastbourne Theatre Royal by " the 1890s".

"So the Theatre Royal faced a battle for audience share. Its worries were compounded when in 1887 another Phipps theatre, the Exeter Theatre Royal caught fire during a performance with the loss of many lives. The inquest brought severe criticism of Phipps' design and the Eastbourne Theatre Royal was once again closed amid widespread consternation so that safety could be overhauled to comply with stricter regulations. It reopened on Whit Monday 1888 with more exits and further safety measures.

Yet more competition came that year with the opening of the new permanent Pier Pavilion, but under new management by Messrs Roberts, Archer and Bartlett the Theatre Royal found new popularity in the 1890s by balancing fashionable and popular appeal, with D'Oyly Carte productions of Gilbert and Sullivan light operas exceptional crowd-pullers."

I've just noticed that Chris had already posted bits about Edmund being at Eastbourne, on 21 March 2014 - page 2 of this thread.

Nothing later than 1886, though, as far as I can see.

According to the link below, he moved to Eastbourne after Perth.


"Edmund Stiles, the first manager, also marketed the Public Hall as the Perth "Theatre Royal" running it in conjunction with his lease of Stirling's Arcade Theatre in 1884 and 1885. Those engaged at Perth included Arthur Lloyd in his Our Party in both these years. Companies often performed three nights in Stirling and three in Perth.

An ad in the The Stage 23 January 1885 shows him as Licensee and Manager of the 'Perth Opera House' ??

Sorry folks, no time to post more!, but below FMP (probably Ancestry also) gives mention of Father, Edmund Stiles, address (then crossed through) 57,Paddock Lane, Walsall, to, 69, Hatherton Street, Walsall.

In 1871 Edmund senior is a carpenter.
In 1881 he's a theatrical manager. Quite a change!

Perhaps he took a stage name after 1881 ??

Fanny seems to disappear as well.

Fanny's daughter Ellen marries in Huddersfield in 1884.
Fanny's son Lewis/Louis also marries in 1884 in Huddersfield.
Freddy, I think, maries in 1896 and is living in Devon by 1901.

Deleted, wrong generation, (before I saw your post AG) must learn to read!!

There is no record of Edmund junior's marriage to Elizabeth. Presumably they did not marry.

I know it has been a long time since I posted this enquiry, but do's anyone have any fresh ideas?

walls Edmund Stiles born 1841 Kempsey, Worcs. Have his
birth, marriage and census records, but cannot find his death.
Son Edmund Stiles born 1866 London have records of birth
all census records including 1911 and death in 1944 but cannot find record of his marriage to Elizabeth Westley born
1871 in Walsall, Staffordshire.
