That family does fit rather perfectly ... but it could be coincidence, another family from Ireland with a fairly common name ...

One thing you might do if you want to put a bit of money into it is check daughter Sarah Jane's marriage certificate

Marriages Sep 1883
CHANDLER Richard Sunderland 10a 834
Henry Sarah Jane Sunderland 10a 834

and see what it says about her father John Henry

do the witness's names on the marriage certificate seem to mean anything ?

a bit more info about Sarah who was (also) working away from home in 1881

hi all...
just to say thanx for the help...i sent away for the above marriage cert as advise by joonie and it arrived today...as yes great news sarahs father john henry is also listed as calico weaver for occupation but even better the witness names for the marriage were GUESS WHAT? yeah Mary Henry and Alexander Scott!! bingo! :-D

well that's excellent info that you found about the John and Isabella marriage -- I actually don't think the certificate would tell you anything else, that is the info you wanted a certificate for ( occcupation, father's name, father's occupation )

I have tried at familysearch for the birth of any Henry or Henery (or Hendry) birth at all to John and Isabella but the unnamed one is all there is that I can find.

sean Report 13 Feb 2014 21:56

it looks like i have found john henry death, 1887 aged 74 houghton (co durham) which would tie in with the info that you ve post already. and using the info you gave me about isabella cochran and john henry marriage abt 1849. i put the details in (irish roots site) it actually has his occupation (weaver) and his father was called john henry also and same occupation. isabella no occupation but her father thomas was a flax scutcher( what ever that is aint googled it yet). just carnt find birth of mary.(maybe the unamed henery birth is the one who knows.

a bit more info about Sarah who was (also) working away from home in 1881

Name: Sarah Henry
Age: 19
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relationship to Head: Servant
Where born: Derry Po...urne (CNS) *

Civil Parish: Houghton Le Spring
County/Island: Durham
Street address: 12 Newbottle St Lamb Inn
Occupation: Domestic Servant
Registration district: Houghton Le Spring

* what it says is Derry Portlenone I think

which seems to be

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portglenone
Portglenone, County Antrim

which fits with the person in the tree here at this website

there is also Jane Henry in the 1901 shown born in Durham and is called sister-in-law but she is also shown as married - so either she was the wife of a brother of Sarah or she was a married sister of Sarah whose surname was recorded incorrectly

I think she was probably the sister-in-law, this is likely her and her husband in 1891

Name: Thomas Henry
Age: 41
Estimated birth year: abt 1850
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Jane Henry
Where born: Armagh, Ireland
Civil Parish: Hetton le Hole

this is Thomas in 1911

Name: Thomas Henry
Age in 1911: 62
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Relation to Head: Head
Birth Place: Armagh, Ireland
Civil Parish: Harraton
County/Island: Durham
Street address: 15 Biddick Row Washington Durham
Marital Status: Widowed
Occupation: Coal Miner
Registration district: Chester le Street

Armagh being where Sarah Jane reported in 1911 that she was born ... which makes it all a bit confusing although they certainly look like the same peope ...

sean

sean Report 13 Feb 2014 19:32

no there is no occupation, just that she is 23 spinster feb 11th 1885 (the marriage)
residence hetton downs,,,father is john and his profession in calico weaver...but i suppose he could have changed his job numerous times as it seams when mary henry had been married they moved a lot, prob going where the work was

Did Mary give her occupation on the marriage certificate please?

That 1881 census does look hopeful.

hi potty
on the marriage cert it just says residence at time of marriage is hetton downs..
doesnt give a number or anything...but ive just noticed on the 1891 census it says
Ecclesiastical parish: Eppleton
> Town: Hetton Downs
County/Island: Durham...
john henry street address is eppleton row
hmmmm maybe i can see some light after all...but no sign of mary...on the census info posted above...but i am now starting to think this is her family but she was living and working as a servant in the county hotel old elvet..its around that time ore am i just trying to make it fit...

Potty Report 13 Feb 2014 14:22

Sean, what is Mary's address on the marriage cert? Is the same as John's in the 1881?

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Feb 2014 03:37

here is a family you might want to look at

1881

Name: John Henry
Age: 67
Estimated birth year: abt 1814
Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Isabella Henry
Where born: Ireland
Occupation: Lab Unable To Work

> Civil Parish: Hetton le Hole
County/Island: Durham
Street address: Eppleton Row
Registration district: Houghton Le Spring

John Henry 67
Isabella Henry 55
George Henry 21

all born Ireland

1891

Name: George Henry
Age: 30
Estimated birth year: abt 1861
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ann Henry
Mother's name: Isabella Henry
Where born: Ireland
Occupation: coal miner

Civil Parish: Hetton le Hole
Ecclesiastical parish: Eppleton
> Town: Hetton Downs
County/Island: Durham

George Henry 30
Ann Henry 29 born Murton Durham
George Wm Henry 5
John Henry 11
Isabella Henry 3
Isabella Henry 62 widow

(but I don't see a death before 1891 for a John)

unfortunately I was hoping that in some census sometime, one of them would have identified a place of birth in Ireland ... 1911 is usually the best hope for that but I can't see George Henry or his family there at all ...

but they are in the right place at the right time so it could be something to investigate

edit, found mother Isabella in 1901

Name: Isabella Henry
Age: 74
Estimated birth year: abt 1827
Relation to Head: Mother-in-law
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Ireland
Civil Parish: Hetton le Hole
Ecclesiastical parish: Eppleton All Saints
Town: Hetton Downs
County/Island: Durham

Richard Chandler 43
Sarah J Chandler 38
James Chandler 15
* George H Chandler 12
Florence Chandler 10
Robert Chandler 8
Isabella Henry 74
Jane Henry 46
Elizabeth Canny 50
* born 1889, George Henry Chandler, named for uncle it seems

so Sarah J Chandler is her daughter and Jane Henry is another daughter

this is the birth of Sarah's son Robert

Births Sep 1893
Chandler Robert Houghton 10a 526

two people at this website have Robert Chandler 1890 Hetton-le-Hole / Co Durham in their trees ... there was no such birth so that person is probably the one in the above household

someone else has Sarah Jane Henry 1863 Antrim Ireland "?"

it would be worth contacting them to see whether they know anything that would indicate whether this is the family you are looking for

and edit again, at last a glimmer of fact

Name: Sarah Jane Chandler
Age in 1911: 49
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relation to Head: Wife
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Tandragee, Ireland [Co Armagh]
Civil Parish: Shotton
County/Island: Durham

one lone birth to match that info that doesn't help ...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FR9P-27S

Name: Henery [no given name shown]
Gender: Male
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 09 May 1867
Birthplace: 0288, TANDERAGEE DISTRICT, ARMAGH, IRELAND

Can anyone suggest anything else i can try as I feel like giving up at the moment, all I have is my Great grandmothers name and maiden name and her marriage cirtificate where it states her fathers name, she was born in ireland but I cant find any record online on any of the websites suggested to go back any further in ireland, are some people just untraceable? the biggest problem is her name is very popular, Mary Henry and her father is John, i have found a few but the dates dont match up.
