I will be in my late 70's, and am ill like Madmeg so will probably never get to see it....i don't see a good argument for not releasing it... what harm can it do now?

I cannot understand why if this census was Promised NOT to be released for 100 years...some think it is ok to break that promise....just because of their hobby

Yes there is one person I would like to know where he was in 1921......but it wont happen....so be it

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 6 Feb 2014 23:35

Well Jude I will be 70. Those 6 years make a difference. I am not well now. I appreciate that is not relevant to the argument. I can't see why releasing now, 6 years early, is an issue.

Roy ...I am NOT a hooligan lol :-) and Gins doesn't look like that (if she does there is NO WAY she is a hooligan) and Gins - I'm not a cottager :-S YOU can call me a Peacock or a Lilywhite or a Pill**k :-)

Madmeg....get what you are saying; but let's face it if it released in 2021 - and I realise there is no guarantee of this - it's not the end of the world. I, personally, will be 64 - cue The Beatles - in 2021 :-)

Stella - have faith - you must be 82 at most :-)

I think it will be an extremely useful censes for family historians, cos it was after WW1 that people really started to move around the country. I have loads of gaps for relatives who were of service age in 1914 who disappeared to me after that.

I have signed the (badly worded) petition. I hope it works. People talk about privacy of data but with a bit of stealth you can find out anything about anybody nowadays. The powers that be ought to be protecting the rights of today's living people, not refusing to disclose info on people who will be 93 or more years old.

As the census in 1931 was destroyed, and there wasn't one in 1941, this 1921 census is the last opportunity for us grey-haired researchers to find out what happened to relatives after WW1. Most of us researchers will be in our 70s by the time of the official release of the 1921 census, and we will be dead by the time of the next one in 2051. It's the last real set of records that any FH researchers will ever use.

Pity Macc Town didn't do their stuff against Sheffield Wednesday in the cup replay!

I have signed it because i wish to know where my parents were in 1921, i cannot find out anything about them after 1911 when my father was 1 yr old and my mother was born in 1912.

I have no living family to ask about either of them.

If i have to wait another 7 yrs i might not be around myself to see it.

I shall not sign it thank you. I count myself fortunate, since my research actively commenced in 1999, that I have been able to obtain so much information, from the Mormons' records initially including the 1881 census right up to quite recent records. I prefer to try to find out about the social history, the living conditions, housing, employment, transport etc, there is so much to discover about the how as well as the when.

The only advantage I can see about "going local" is that you might be able to "have a looksee" before paying and then if it's not your relative then you save money...I cannot fault GRO...

jax Report 5 Feb 2014 17:36

If you had stuck to GRO Val, the price has been the same for the last 4 years

Val23

Val23 Report 5 Feb 2014 17:35

Cane......try googling it, i am sure that i have read somewhere that you can obtain medical records but only for a deceased person.

Val23

Val23 Report 5 Feb 2014 17:32

I read this post with interest, in some respects i do agree with Cane, the cost does go up. I have used various offices to obtain certs and its obviously not a fee set by the government as it varies depending on which offices you order from.

It's more about the moral issue,

If we seek to overturn the 100 year closure rule on the census then were and when do we draw the line?

Should we seek to publish all historic documents regardless of closure rules

May be we should be totaly open with all records

It would be great if i could search online for any info what so ever even if i had to pay, Just think how easy it would be for anyone to find anything out about You and Me,................. NO thanks

I know plenty of people who think that being able to search the BMD index for people who are still alive as wrong and even some who think that being able to get a copy of a BMD cert for living people to be immoral.

I believe the USA is 70 years as 1941 has just been released

Who are these other countries? Canada has strict privacy laws and Australia destroy theirs after they take the info they need.....never seen a NZ one but could not comment about there

Denburybob

Denburybob Report 2 Feb 2014 20:42

I would happily pay for the Records Office to do a "look up" on a specific question from the 1921 census. Feelings appear to be mixed on the question of early release. I believe the USA release theirs after 30 years, and most other countries after 50. Does that cause problems? Bob

All my family history is English.....they also all ended up in London which helps but then moved to an Essex London borough which didn't help.

This is a hobby which I choose to do the census's are no use to anyone if they are not interested in family history.

When I have spoken to my mum about what I have found......her reply was 'I am not interested in the living ones (meaning her siblings) so why do I want to know about the dead ones?'

So who would pay for this to be transcribed if it ever happened early?.....which it probably wont anyway

I pay to subscribe to ancestry and FMP plus here at a cost of approx. £270 a year plus used Seax for a month last year bringing it up to £300......so its not that cheap

I could buy some death certs or other marriages I don't have.....but only buy them if stuck which luckerly hasn't happened very often in my direct family
