Thank you JoonieCloonie! Corrected on ancestry and also thought of adding the name Hardy?! Let me know what you think?
Also thank you for the 1841 Choccy!
Catherine, wow thank you so much - now, to answer your question. I have NEVER found a marriage between Joseph Hardy and Isabella Tennant and I have looked! I did it in the pre internet days in my local library using the St. Catherine's House indexes on microfiche! And in regards to Samuel Booth - I didn't know he even existed until a few days ago when I found this article!
And Samuel looks to have had a few partners himself.
For more information on Joseph, he was living in Stockton, County Durham by 1858 as his wife Isabella died there for a problem with pregnancy ... the death certificate is very vauge. Hs was living in Middlebrough by 1861 and his daughter had moved there by 1871, where the both married and died in 1930s. Joseph was visiting a family in Cumbria in 1881 and was possibly in the Middlesbrough Workhouse in 1896, but only for a short time. He seems to have retired to Swainby, a village near Stokesley in North Yorkshire and he died there in 1902.

May I just ask if you have the marriage certificates of either of the brothers? Would be interesting to know if they put down the name of a father, or not!
I also see you live near Eston, well there's a coincidence, I was born in M'bro so not a million miles away. :-)

Thank you so much again! So it looks as though one brother took the name Booth and one, my ancestor, Joseph, took the name Hardy.
There was also a sister Margaret born 1831 ... I assume she died young.
Likewise, can't find a baptism for Samuel and how lovely to see what became of him. Funny, I am typing this a 10 minute walk away from Eston which is where he lived. Small world.
With this, can't find a baptism or marriage for Mary herself. I also suspect she died in Carlisle in 1864 so hoping she is on another census. The 1855 marriage could be her, but I suspect not, as why would she be recorded as Mary Ann there, and not previously.
Thank you so much again for your help!

Choccy - call me stupid, but where did you get this from? I can't find the 1851 on Ancestry ... I had looked also before making this post.
Also, if any one could please find a marriage for Mary Hardy/Booth (already looked on familysearch to no avail), and a baptism (would prefer a second opinion), that would be appreciated.
Thank you again! Great to have that birth place!

Thank you so much! Catherine and Choccy - wow, thank you! I had looked but couldn't find this, but I am a little tired after transcribing newspapers all day!
Now, the 1851 is interesting ... note that Mary BOOTH/HARDY'S house is in English Damside, which is where Sarah Hardy her granddaughter was living in 1851, and where she was born in 1850 (I have a copy of her birth certificate).
With this, the following article shows her son Joseph gathering bail for his mother:
Mr Moore – Very well; call Joseph Hardy of Union Street. Mr P.J. Dixon – Who is he? Mr Kitts – Oh, he’s a son of Mary Hardy’s. Mr Moore – Never mind that; sons or brothers will do. Mr Jackson – There can be no objection to reasonable bail, keeping in view the position in life of the persons. Mr Moore – If the Magistrates refuse this bail, and an application is made to the Court of Queen’s Bench, the Court will say it is amply sufficient. Joseph Hardy then said he worth £20 after payment of all his just debts.
(Carlisle Patriot Saturday 03 February 1855)
NOTE IN 1861 Census, posted above, SARAH HARDY, daughter of JOSEPH HARDY was living in UNION STREET, CARLISLE, with her maternal grandmother. With this, the same article goes onto state:
While the officers were engaged in bringing Mrs Hardy from gaol in a cab, Mr Moore and Mr Kitts amused themselves and the Court by “chaffing” each other. Mr Moore – Mrs Hardy is a very respectable woman. Mr Kitts – Yes; she has been convicted once, and kept a disorderly house for the last 50 years, if the newspapers are correct. Mr Moore – Oh, never mind the newspapers; they are not always correct; she is “a very respectable woman.” (Laughter.) Mr Kitts – Yes; I beleive the inhabitants burned her effigy 20 years’ ago. (Renewed laughter). Mr Moore – I never heard of that. She is a “very respectable woman.” (Laughter). Mr Kitts – Yes; so respected by a certain class of gentleman that I understand they are going to build her a new house in the country. Mr P.J. Dixon – What! In the rural district? (Laughter.) Mr Kitts – Yes. Mr Moore – I am glad to hear that. I hope you will subscribe! (Renewed laughter.) Mr Kitts – Oh yes, I will look after her. Mr Moore – Mrs Hardy is “a very respectable woman.” (Laughter.) The officers here arrived with “Old Mally”; bail was accepted, and she was again set at liberty. (Carlisle Patriot Saturday 03 February 1855)
HOWEVER, there is a problem when we see:
Mrs. Hardy has two sons, gamekeepers; and I have seen one of them, “Joe,” go by with dogs. Their masters may go and look after them for anything I know.
(Carlisle Journal Friday 02 March 1855)
I have never seen Joseph Hardy noted as a gamekeeper before ... what do you think? In 1861 he is living in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire and lived there over the next decades and his daughters moved and settled there. In these years Joseph seemed to have worked as a 'fitter'. He was baptised in 1829 in Carlisle son of Mary Hardy, singlewoman. Hmmm thoughts and opinions appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi there,
This post pertains to some research I found on Saturday.
Since then, I have also found this article and would like to find this ancestor in the 1851 and 1861 census:
MARY BOOTH, otherwise MAY HARDY, was indicted for keeping disorderly house, at English Damside. She pleaded “not guilty”. Mr. M’Oubrey conducted the prosecution; the prisoner was undefendead. After a careful investigation, the case was clearly proved, and the Jury returned a verdict of guilty. In passing sensentce, his Lordship said he had no doubt she kept this sort of house. As she had stated, she had lived for forty or fifty years in the same house; and it more the same for her that she, in her old age, with her grey hairs, and one foot in the grave, should be promoting immorality, as she was no longer fit for it herself. He did not know whether she had any daughters to bring up, but she appeared to have no feeling for those parents who ha; and he beleived that she kept this place to promote immorality amongst those girls who would otherwise be decent and moral in their conduct. The sentance of the Court, therefore, upon her was, that she be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for six calendar months. (Carlisle Journal Friday 28 February 1851 CUMBERLAND SPRING ASSIZES.)
AND, then four years later, a lengthy article which shows:
MARY BOOTH, otherwise MARY HARDY, (aged 65, widow, neither reads nor writes), who had been out on bail, surrended herself to take her trial, on a charge of keeping a disorderly house for the purposes of prostitution, at the English Damside, in this city.
(Carlisle Journal Friday 02 March 1855)
Obviously Mary may have died by the 1861 census but I can't find a death for her ... can you help?
Peter
