Hi Chris,

Thanks for the sites. I am wondering if Mary Renshaw who died en route on the Berwick Castle was from another marriage or yet another child before the marriage in 1851? I have done a search and not found anything. The Fencibles site was very interesting. I found someone on there researching the same couple but alas it was 9 years ago and the email address in invalid.

Yes the death on route is worrying. The birth i found in tasmanIa does not fit with the death on route. And who were the two children?

The ship Berwick Castle took 6 months to come from England to NZ. via Falkland Islands. In a southern winter storm the ship lost its rudder and had to improvise enough to get to Hobart, Tasmania where it was repaired.

Hobart births - RENSHAW, Mary Ann, daughter of Richard Renshaw, pensioner, and Jemima Jones, born 14th October 1852 - so during this terrible voyage Jemima was very pregnant. I wonder if they named the new baby after the Mary Ann who died of whooping cough. The mystery of the two other children still remains.

Richard (it has Richard/Robert on the passenger list) must have been pensioned out of the 81st Foot Regiment.

He is listed as Robert on the death index so that fits although at his age it seems strange to call him pensioner!!!!!!!! I think the Mary Ann angle is probably correct....but I can't find a birth to match

Very sad. Baby Mary Ann born in Hobart died 15 days later in Auckland. Not surprising I suppose. (from a tree on Ancestry)
