Yes, or Newell, that looks like her thanks Gins. I'm not sure about the bank record stating she had been in US for 9 years - she was born in 1849 (reg Cockermouth), so she must have been only about 15 when she emigrated. I've just checked the ancestry passenger lists again for around 1864, but not finding her. |

It's the only one looking even remotely likely Pat - she must have been very brave going on her own, I can't see any other Newells on that voyage. |

Maybe she was going to join uncle/grandfather after all. I think this is her grandfather, who disappeared after the 1861 census - he was a shipwright or ships carpenter on the 1851/61 census: |

I'm really grateful to you all, my mother who was brought up by her maternal grandparents (Maurice Henderson, her grandad) following her mother's death at just 22 of meningitis when mum was just 3, remembered her aunt May (although really she was her great aunt). But, although I've managed to fill in a lot of the family history, never had got anywhere with May (Mary Frances) prior to her marriage. |
