I did see this one for Mary Mackie Hughes, but according to the information I have her parents were Charles Mckie and Ann Bold or Boal. I did wonder, but on a closer look it states she was a widow of ??couldn't quiet make out the name but it definitely wasn't a Charles. She must be there, he never went on his own?? :-S |

On Mary McKie Hughes's death record above, it says "widow of Charles" above her name. |

Ages sound about right, but is Jas not short for James?? I did see a passenger list for 1883 for Chas Hughes aged 68 and wife Mary aged 65 heading for Boston Massachusetts on the Prussion arriving 23 May and wondered if they could have knocked off 10 years.. Is that possible ? |

Yes, Jas is short for James - I thought maybe a clerk had misheard! Maybe somone dictated "Chas" from some document, and it was heard as "Jas"?! |

This will be the birth you were told about. Maybe whoever told you just thought it must be her because the date and place matched the census?? |

Just got home from work Argyllgran, thanks! I am beginning to wonder if my Mary Mckie WAS the daughter of Charles and Ann Bold, there were other siblings Susanna (Susan) and Charles b1811. The deaths for Mary Mackie and Charles Hughes is definitely them, but its the parents of Mary which has thrown me. I'm wondering what happened to the other brother William Mcreadie Hughes who was on the same ship as Charles b1847. It would appear from all the information that Charles Hughes snr and wife Mary Mackie Hughes were living near the son Charles. :-) |

Mmm the passenger list for New York wouldn't have been them!! they would have been going to Boston where their sons were (or at least Charles, since there is no sign of William and Mary Edgar) I wonder if there would have been a company policy imposed that you had to be no older than (such an age, say 70) to travel, it would have taken some time to travel by ship from Scotland to Boston, and ships company wouldn't want to be responsible for any death on board.. |

The pre-1855 births/baptisms on Scotlandspeople are taken from the old Parish Records of the Church of Scotland. There were other churches whose records may not be included. |

I was just pointing out that if your Mary isn't the one whose baptism you found, she may have been baptised in a church whose records aren't on line. |

You could be right there Polly, the thought did cross my mind that I could be looking at a different Mary...According to all the census records from 1841-1881 she's from Penninghame Wigtown and that was the only birth I could trace...But there could well have been another birth (not recorded) don't know how I'm going to get round this one tho.. :-S :-S |

You may just have to accept that you've reached a dead end with Mary's birth and parents, Nancy! |
