But there are two census records for 1851 one with Caroline and one with Ann.
Not forgetting the other one in prison in 1851

Gee Report 4 Sep 2013 16:21

There is something not right about all this!

There is only one death in Eng/Wales (1861 - 1940) for a man with his name and that's in Reading in 1879

I've traced him back on the censuses to it's not 'our' man

I'm still thinking Jer* was a naughty boy and had two families....of course, I could be way off beam :-S

Mary, it's a good idea, re the marriages, but it's actually the same Jeremiah - the one that married Ann Turner.

Marriages Mar 1850
York Jeremiah Shoreditch 2 300
York Jeremiah Shoreditch 20 300 <<<<<<<

Someone has transcribed the volume number as 20 instead of 2, and 20 is the registration volume for Lancashire:

GRO INDEXES REGISTRATION DISTRICTS

1837-1851 (Roman numerals)

Ref.No. Registration District

II London & Middlesex

XX Lancashire

Edit: on the scan of the index, the volume number for Jeremiah York's entry is ii but without the dots, and the entry above has vol number xx. Did the second transcriber misread the roman numerals ii for a ditto mark, for xx in the entry above?

Mary Report 4 Sep 2013 15:37

1851 West Ham
Jeremiah York born @ 1825 Lewisham kent a prisoner!!

1851 Bethnal green
Jeremiah @ 1823 Lewisham a wadding traveller
Caroline wife

1851
Jeremiah York born @ 1829 Lambeth a wadding Manufacturer and wife Ann
same page as Henry York age 48 a wadding manufacturer.

Maybe your Jeremiah was not the convict at all.

2 marriages for 2 Jeremiahs in Shoreditch
One to Ann turner (Yours)
Another to maybe Caroline but when you view it there are 10 people on the same page, only Jeremiah York is in Shoreditch Page 300 the rest are in Lancashire.
So now we have to find a Caroline marrying J/F/M 1850 in Shoreditch

The job of marine fireman in the 19th century would have been arduous to say the least. He was probably classed as casual labour and employed on a voyage basis, being discharged at the end of each voyage.
He may have had to pay for food(Victuals) on board unless provided by the ship owner."Sufficient without waste" was the terminology used.
Working watches(4 to 6 hrs) under the charge of an engineer.
Duties included:-
Maintaing steam pressure as required by "Stoking" the boiler(s)with coal, raking out ashes and disposing of same(by hauling up to the deck and dumping at sea(Ash ejectors were fitted to some ships but it was not the norm)
"Trimming" the coal bunkers to ensure supply to the fireroom("Stokehold") and to maintain stability of the ship.
Certainly he would not have suffered from obesity.
Payment varied but was always low and he probably had to supply his own bedding(maybe a straw matress "Donkeys breakfast")

The 1861 census has the two children (above) listed with a Jer* (Hannah on the transcription!) & Caroline York, cant make out his occupation?

Was just wondering if Jer* had more than one family?

Just checked for a marriage between Caroline & Jer*, can't find one
