Been looking at the Marstin family and Elizabeth's sister Eliza who married John Thomas Marstin had a son Percy who married an Ellen Eliza Buckley whose parents were Henry and Elizabeth Buckley!
I am pretty sure this is the family in 187 mistranscribed - It is a pretty poor image but I think it is Buckley and Elizabeth's POB is Walworth: 1871 England Census about Elizabeth Backey
Name:Elizabeth Backey Age:32 Estimated Birth Year:abt 1839 Relation:Wife Spouse's Name:Henry Backey Gender:Female Where born:Walworth, Essex, England Civil Parish:Greenwich Ecclesiastical parish:St Alphage Town:Greenwich Henry Backey 37 labourer Elizabeth Backey 32 Elizabeth Backey 7 Maryam Backey 5 Henry Backey 4 Ellen Backey All born Greenwich except Elizabeth Snr

Do hope the cert comes before the end of next week as I will be away for about 3 weeks after that and might not pick up the thread when I get back.
If it does come later, would one of you please PM me to jog my memory?

Do you think it looks ok then Potty? I was a bit worried about the labourer versus blacksmith thing, but the rest seemed to fit reasonably well with the info we had on Henry from the marriage register.
I just wish we could find Elizabeth in 1871, hopefully with Henry Buckley, just to firm things up a bit.
Am champing at the bit for that cert to arrive!
If it's what we hope, then MrsBB has the task of persuading her SIL not to believe everything you read on Ancestry trees...

Well done, Kucinta!
We shall have to wait until Geraldine gets that birth cert! Do hope it says what we are expecting or we will be back to square one!

Bless you for trying but I have to switch off until we get that birth cert. My brains pickled.. I'm old....one week of jumping out on Mr Postie!..
I did have a conversation with Potty about the Brother Charles but decided for now to let it rest. Maybe he was carted off as a home child too? Or maybe Charles was his 2nd name....sometimes I hate this hobby.
Yes your right both of you SIL has been following the tree on Ancestry. She has only just started her tree (this week in fact) and has a lot to learn. She's addicted already lol We never stop learning do we....then we die....then we become an ancestor. Makes you wonder why we bother lol but I do love it. Putting meat on the bones. I feel I know Ada a little now.....thanks to all your help.

I finally found Catherine and Henry in 1861 badly mistrancribed, by doing a search of York Street, The image does actually say Buckley, not Buckridge.
Unfortunately he is described as labourer rather than blacksmith, which may not rule him out completely as Elizabeth Mastin's husband, people often elevated their status on official documents, so a blacksmith's labourer might become a blacksmith, but it isn't the definitive fit that I'd hope for. :-(
Census 1861
Address: 6, York Street, Greenwich County: London, Kent
BUCKRIDGE, Catherine Head Widow F 61 1800 Charwoman Greenwich, Kent BUCKRIDGE, Henry Son Unmarried M 24 1837 Labourer Greenwich, Kent

If we did want to trace Henry Buckley, all we know is from the marriage that Potty found.
Henry was of full age in Dec 1861, so born by 1840 at the latest. He was a blacksmith, and his father had the forename Richard and was a waterman.
This baptism is a tentative fit, but no direct link, and like Potty and Mrs BB, I'm firmly in the camp of Henry Harling being Ada's dad, unless that birth cert makes us have a rethink.
Name: Henry Buckley Record Type: Baptism Baptism Date: 5 Jul 1837 Father's Name: Richard Buckley Mother's Name: Catherine Buckley Parish or Poor Law Union: Greenwich St Alphege Borough: Greenwich Register Type: Parish Registers
Born 7th Feb 1837. Address Sexton's buildings.Father Richard is a waterman.
I think this is Henry in 1841, no sign of either father Richard, or a brother Richard who was baptised in 1835.
'Cate' is actually written Cat, then a small raised 'e', so I think it is an abbreviated verison of Catherine, rather than a diminutive.
Census 1841:
Address: York Street, Greenwich County: Kent
BUCKLEY, Cate F 35 1806 HUGHES, Caroline F 10 1831 Kent BUCKLEY, Henry M 4 1837 Kent
This could be the death of father Richard in 1838.. The address was given as York Place:
Name: Richard Buckley Record Type: Burial Estimated Death Date: abt 1838 Burial Date: 31 Aug 1838 Age: 33 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805 Parish or Poor Law Union: Greenwich St Alphege Borough: Greenwich Register Type: Parish Register
This looks like the death of the infant Richard, son of Richard and Catherine, who was baptised in 1835:
Name: Richard Buckley Record Type: Burial Estimated Death Date: abt 1835 Burial Date: 8 Nov 1835 Age: 3 Months Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835 Parish or Poor Law Union: Greenwich St Alphege Borough: Greenwich Register Type: Parish Register
Address: York Place.
Catherine and son Henry in census 1851:
Address: York Street, Greenwich County: Kent
BUCKLEY, Cathe Head Widow F 50 1801 Mangler Paddington, Middlesex BUCKLEY, Henry Son M 14 1837 Greenwh, Kent
Unfortunately I can't find Henry or Catherine in 1861, to see if Henry did indeed become a blacksmith, which would tally with the marriage record.
(There is a Henry Buckley, waterman, born around the same time and place as Henry, showing in census 1861, but he traces back to a baptism that shows him to be the son of Henry Joseph Buckley, a waterman, and his wife Louisa)
I guess there's not much point in pursuing the Buckley line, as he is almost certainly not Ada's father, but as he would appear on the tree as Elizabeth Mastin's husband, it would be nice to at least get birth date/location for him.

Agreed, Kucinta - from the first reference to Ada, giving her POB as Brockley, Suffolk when the supporting census clearly says Brockley, London, those trees are pretty bad examples of researching!

So has Geraldine's SIL spotted Henry Buckley in the census with Elizabeth, in order to be able to identify his approximate date and place of birth, and pursue his line (even though we're pretty sure he's not Ada's biological father)?
I hope she's not just going by public Ancestry trees, as Potty said previously, they have conflicting information, and look pretty iffy to me.

MrsBB, glad to hear you are getting the cert - lets hope it is the right one!
Kucinta and anybody else who has been looking, I have sent some info to MrsBB by PM, including the following, which gives brother Walter's DOB (the address on the image is the same road, although different No to the 1881):
London, England, School Admissions and Discharges, 1840-1911
about Walter Harling Name:Walter Harling Age:6 Birth Date:8 Jul 1876 School:Lucas Street School Borough:Lewisham Admission Date:28 Aug 1882 Parent:Harry Notes:Lucas Street School (0471) opened in 1879. Later renamed Gainsford School, then Lucas Vale School in 1938
This seems to rule out the birth in Dec 1876, which probably refers to another Walter, father Alfred, whose School record gives a DOB of 13 Sep 1876.
I am still trying to find Elizabeth in 1871 and Walter in 1901.

Potty and Kucinta
I see you have both still got your teeth firmly into this....bless you lol Had reply mail from SIL this morning....
"That's all pretty mysterious. Ada was born in 1883. Married in 1902 in Dundas Ontario, a little town just outside Hamilton. Her inlaws lived there."
I have access to her tree so checked. SIL has gone back on the Buckley line oops!
Lesson to be learned here...Never try to research your Family tree without buying a few certs!
Not sure SIL believes us?? So....I'm sending off for Ada Edith HARLING birth cert. Sod the expense!
Watch this space...
ps Kucinta I have forwarded the info you gave from ups and downs too. Thank you. It's amazing! BTW My own Grandmother was a home child in Barnados and was sent to Canada aged 9. Poor little things.

The following are notes of all the girls seen and visits paid by one of our visitors on a recent circuit round the Niagara district. In some cases, for obvious reasons, we withhold names, either mistress or maid, and naturally details of household arrangements, wages, clothing, etc., are omitted.

The final image of the army record images I sent for Henry Harling showed him to be a brickmaker, and his intended abode on his discharge in 1873 was Greenwich., which seems to tie in well with Henry Harling in 1881 census, as does his Erith birthplace and year.

Geraldine, I was about to say glad I have dogs and not cats (they (the dogs) are too big to jump on the keyboard) but my two have just started WW3 with next door's dogs so may be not!
Yes, this has been fun - love it when it all comes together.
I would love to know what happened to Henry Buckley but he seems to disappear.
So, it looks as if Ada's father was Henry Harling - I think I managed to trace him back - will look later as have to take the above dogs out.

Potty your a star. Thank you so much for all your help everyone else too.(although it was me that did the hard bit of finding Ada Ediths birth lol) My SIL is going to be thrilled with the outcome. As for buying certs, i'll wait and see if she wants to buy any although i'd love to buy Ada Edith Harlings birth. Potty I think that maybe Elizabeth gave Ada's Surname as Buckley because of the stigma of having a different surname as herself? After all Elizabeth was legally a Buckley. It does look like Elizabeth and H.Buckley didn't have any Children but at the moment we are only interested in Ada........for now.
Last night it took me ages to put all this info in order on e.mail to SIL. I was just signing off when the bl**dy cat jumped on my keyboard and I lost the lot!...cat didn't get her dinner last night. So I did it all over again....Couldn't wait for excited reply this morning.........nothing! So I checked in my out box and there was nothing there! God knows where it went. So i'm going to have to do it all yet again :-| This has been a fun one to do and nice to get the answers. Geraldine x
