No way!!! :-0 Elizabeth would have been better off buying a telly!

Kay???? I'm not sure. I'll have a look and see if I can find them. Not sure if I know what i'm doing but will give it a try.
Whats the ages?

I wonder when contraception started? My Mother in laws Mum had three children before she knew the truth. She thought she was having babies because she got Married! She was scared to death on her wedding night and didn't know what he was doing....bless her.
When my Mum Married she used a doosh/doush pump as that was all there was in 1935....yuk!
Sorry if any men are reading this :-D

Have ordered the 2 certs.
Ellen Eliza Buckley birth 1869 Q4 Greenwich 1d-801 and Henry Buckley death 1916 Q4 Epsom 2a-36....
Mr Postie gets my FULL attention until eta 4th Sept. Think i'll cut the hedge down lol

mgnv...I have already got loads on the Stevens line and have more to come from Canada from the Dunnville History centre. A lady there is doing the history of Dunnville and says the Stevens Family played a big part in the history of the town.....and the Province of Haldimand... Lucky me er?
Many thanks for all your input though All info is a treasure.

When you get the 1916 death cert, maybe this will have some relevance:

Potty Report 28 Aug 2013 11:37

Do hope that cert comes before Friday as I am off on holiday from Saturday morning.

Haven't much time today as will be out most of it. A quick glance at the 1871 and I would suggest Ellen Eliza's birth cert as she has a second name so the birth might be easier to identify.

Will leave mgnv to help with the Canadian side as I have little knowledge of searching there.

I'll leave it up to Potty as she found the 1871 census - which was a pretty large break through!

Census 1871 had the address 1 East Lane, and the baptisms I posted had the address East St or East Lane, usually number one, so you have middle names for the children to make them even more identifiable in the BMD indexes.

Wouldn't dream of fighting :-0

Walter looks very easy on the eye - but very serious. It's strange how a 'look' can reappear over the generations. he certainly played his part in history.

NO CERT yet. Mr Postie hides under the hedge if theres no post for me lol.

What am I going to do with you two!! WOW is all I can say. Your amazing.
mgnv...All that info is being stored for when we have sorted the Buckley/Harling lot.
...again...WOW. That amount of info would have taken me forever! actually I would never have found it all. I'm old n slow lol

Right! I have decided to buy that death cert of Henry Buckley 1916 as I have a theory after reading the following....

'Lost_ Hospitals_ of_ London'

The Greenwich and Deptford workhouse opened in 1840 on a 4 acre site at the east side of Vanbrugh Hill. Originally designed to accommodate 650 fit and 200 ill paupers, by 1851 the average number of inmates was over 1000.

By the 1870s it had become increasingly necessary to provide medical care and, in 1874, plans were drawn up for a new infirmary block so that space could be freed up in the south block of the workhouse for able-bodied inmates.

The Greenwich Union Infirmary opened in 1876 and consisted of two 3-storey pavilions, which could house 400 patients, and a 4-storey administration block, which also contained staff accommodation. It had cost £35,000 and occupied a 3-acre site immediately south of the workhouse.

>>> Prospective inmates were sent to neighbouring unions<<< under a reciprocal exhange scheme, and younger inmates were persuaded to emigrate to the Colonies and to the Dominion of Canada at the expense of the parish rate-payers.

Now then...Epsom and Sutton are very close together? I think Henry was ill and that's why Elizabeth sent the Children away then met Henry Harling? Maybe she still had a soft spot for Henry 1st. but you have to live and survive...Maybe the death cert will give us a clue if it was another kind of home.

I would like you two to tell me which birth cert for which Child would be the best one to buy?....no fighting!!! lol

Can I share something with you as I know you'll understand my excitement as I haven't got any of my own generation left to share it with...My kids just glaze over if I start on about Genealogy lol
I have found a photo of my Canadian 1st Cousin 2x removed. Walter Tyrie Stevens born 1917....He is the image of my Grandson!!!! Even he can see it.

Walter Tyrie was awarded the Purple Heart and a citation for heroic military meret in WW2. Injured while flying over Germany and recuperated in England and upon recovery he was selected to be the navigator of the plane that carried the second atomic bomb from Wendover field, Utah to Tinian island in the Marianas. How proud am I???
I'll replace the cat with Walter Tyrie so you can see how hansom my Grandson is lol
I even have photos of Walters Parents applying for passports!!

Reminder...WHICH CERT?

No, Kucinta, I can't find anything for Charles nor can I find a death for Henry Buckley. If he died in the workhouse infirmary, his death would have been registered.

[Not a perfect fit, but it's only a couple of km N of Hazelhead]

http://www.electricscotland.com/history/gazetteer/ has 1890s maps for every Scottish county showing where parishes are.
Ballater is in Glenmuick parish on Deeside abt 15km E of Balmoral - Tullich is a further 3 km E.
As you travel on down Deeside you come to Banchory abt 25 km from Aberdeen. Strachan is abt 5km S of Banchory, and Durris abt abt 5km E.

(Lochton) 375600,792200
(Sheddocksley) 389000,807400
(Pitreadie Fm) 369200,791000

For a modern map, go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and search for the 13 character string then adjust zoom level (level 3 is good).
For an old map, go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and search for the given coords then select a map - you want 1:2500 or better scale - here 1866 is oldest available, not too bad seeing as they arrived in Canada 1870.

I'm looking up the earlier censuses on http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
ABD and KCD are complete 1841/51 apert from 5 1851 civil parishes in ABD, namely Old Deer, Longside (both just W of Peterhead), Cairnie (between Keith & Huntley, on the Banff border), Old Machar (including Aberdeen), and Drumoak on the KD border, just across the Dee from Durris.
I like the transcription displays better on FreeBMD, cf Ancestry or FMP.
The other nice thing is I can just click on the button and see an adjacent h/h, which is handy when trying to find where an addy is, maybe you'll recognize a neighbour's addy.

E.g.,
1841 Census

Piece: SCT1841/268 Place: Strachan -Kincardineshire Enumeration District: 3

Folio: 3 Page: 2
Address: Knockhill

Knockhill is indexed at Streetmap, but not Pitready (it's now spelled Pitreadie)

I'm not dead certain on the 1851 and earlier censuses, but the 1856 m.cert would help confirm or refute this.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Aug 2013 18:41

If we believe Walter and Ada Edith were Henry Harling's offspring, or at the very least that Walter was using the Harling name in 1881, then there was the child Charles 'Harling' who was born c1879 Deptford Kent.

I'm finding it hard to trace Charles Harling anywhere other than the 1881 census though.

In 1891 Elizabeth Buckley, Walter, Ada et al were living in the Brockley district of Greenwich in Foxberry Road:

Reg. District: Greenwich
Sub District: St Paul Deptford
Parish: Brockley
Enum. District: 47
Ecclesiastical District: All Saints
City/Municipal Borough:
Address: 130, Foxberry Road, Brockley
County: London

In 1881 the Harlings were living at 6 Foxberry Grove. I have no idea if Foxberry Grove and Foxberry Street were close to each other or not.

Edit: according to this site, Foxberry Grove had become Foxberry Road by 1912.

http://www.maps.thehunthouse.com/Streets/Old_to_New_Abolished_London_Street_Names.htm#F

As Potty says, it's a shame we don't have access to the poorhouse records to see when Henry Buckley was admitted, and which Buckley children, if any, came with him.

Potty

Potty Report 24 Aug 2013 16:16

The biggest gap in children's ages is between Walter and Ada Edith.

Looking back at Walter, there is this baptism - father's name is wrong and so is date, if the DOB on the school record is correct - but address is East St, same as the earlier ones:

Hi Kucinta & MrsBB

Have been looking at the Buckley family from the 1871 - had found most of what you have found, Kucinta, although I missed Catherine.

I have put most of the info on a tree on Ancestry (Marstin). I will make it public so that it can be viewed on Mundia in case MrsBB's SIL doesn't have Ancestry Access.

It would be marvellous to be able to search Greenwich Workhouse Records to find out about Henry. It became St Alpheges Hospital which was where I was born!

The birth cert of one of the 1871 children would confirm the mother's maiden name.

Think you may have to do some arm-twisting, MrsBB!

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Aug 2013 14:07

Interestingly enough, given Potty found Henry Buckley in census 1911 alive and still in the workhouse, when his son Henry Alfred Buckley married in 1904, he said Henry was deceased. Maybe they had just lost touch completely.

Name: Henry Alfred Buckley
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Age: 37
Spouse Name: Louisa Foster
Spouse Age: 53
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 24 Apr 1905
Parish: Hatcham St Catherine
Borough: Lewisham
Father Name: Henry Alfred Buckley -hammerman, deceased.
Spouse Father Name: Charles Foster
Register Type: Parish Register

One of the witnesses is John Henry Shanly, who married Henry Alfred's sister, Catherine Isabella, a couple of years previously.

Name: Catherine Isabella Buckley
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1874
Age: 28
Spouse Name: John Henry Shanly
Spouse Age: 25
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 31 Mar 1902
Parish: Woolwich St Mary Magdalene
Borough: Greenwich
Father Name: Henry Buckley - labourer
Spouse Father Name: John Henry Shanly
Register Type: Parish Register

Louisa Foster (later Henry Alfred's bride) was one of the witnesses at this marriage.

EDIT: Louisa's age at marriage is transcribed as 53. It is badly written, and could equally well be 33 (more likely) or 93 (very unlikely!).

Kucinta Report 24 Aug 2013 13:45

"The South Metropolitan District Schools, Sutton
The building of the South Metropolitan District School started in 1852 to educate poor children from Greenwich, Camberwell St Olaves (Southwark) and Woolwich.

The original building bore the date 1853 but it was not completed for several years. It stood on the about a mile south of the centre of Sutton on the west side of the railway line to Belmont and Banstead Downs where Sevenoaks Close is now.

By modern standards it must have been a grim place although at the time it was considered well equipped and comfortable. Apart from the school rooms there was a chapel, a room for play in wet weather, a large swimming pool and workshops where the boys learnt a trade. A hospital and doctors residence was added later.

The original building housed both boys and girls. A separate girls school was later added a short distance away on the opposite side of the railway. A different system was followed when this built. Instead of one large barrack like block there were six self contained blocks with its own kitchen and laundry, each designed for 100 girls, There was also and administrative block, a school block and a large room used for religious purposes and lectures.

In the mid-1890s the school had about 1400-1500 pupils. Each boy had to chose a trade to learn, the main options being carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring, painting, plumbing, bricklaying, baking or garden and farm work. The school had a band and several boys went on to serve in army bands. The older boys assisted in cleaning the dormitories and day and school rooms in their school.

The girls were mostly trained to be domestic servants and they carried out the greater part of the general domestic work in their areas."

Looked like Elizabeth may have had a previous history of offloading her children when the going got tough. Perhaps Henry Harling wouldn't take them on, or perhaps Elizabeth deserted them when she left Henry Buckley, and they were sent to the school when he entered the workhouse

Just to confirm,

The' Backeys' that Potty found in 1871 census were living at No I East Lane Greenwich.

This is the baptism for Ellen Eliza Buckley, who, as Potty said, married her cousin Percy Marstin in 1894.

Name: Ellen Eliza Buckley
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 6 Oct 1869
Father's Name: Henry Buckley
Mother's Name: Elizabeth Buckley
Parish or Poor Law Union: Greenwich, East Christ Church
Borough: Greenwich
Register Type: Parish Registers

Father is a labourer, address is 1 East Lane - so the 'Backeys' definitely are Buckleys.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 24 Aug 2013 13:21

Potty, that's an absolutely brilliant find!

Having looked at the 1871 census image I agree it does look like Buckley, and Henry is also described as a labourer, rather than a blacksmith.

I'm wondering whether a hammerer worked for a blacksmith, and Henry 'poshed up' his job description for the wedding to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's birthplace of Walworth fits in with Walworth for Elizabeth Buckley in 1891, and Newington for Elizabeth 'Harling' in 1881.

So it looks like Henry Buckley and Elizabeth split up sometime between 1871 and 1881, and she then lived over the brush with Henry Harling.

EDIT: Presumably the split came between the birth of Catherine Isabella in 1874 (see baptisms posted later in the thread)

Births Jun 1874 BUCKLEY Catherine Isabella Greenwich 1d 889

and the birth that Potty found and posted earlier, of Walter Harling aka Buckley in 1876.

Births Dec 1876 HARLING Walter Greenwich 1d 868

Also ties in with Henry Harling being set to move back to Greenwich after his discharge from the army 1873.

Could this possibly be Henry in 1881 (still there in 1891) - Hammerman could possibly be related to Blacksmith:
