AG, on all the censuses John's POB is given as Angus, Kirriemuir. He died 1874 aged 84; widower of Margaret Nicol; father:William Spalding; mother: Margaret Lindsay. |

Just to confuse matters further, Charles was born Kirkmichael, Perthshire (1851 Census, which has his occupation as Farmer, Chelsea Pensioner) which is where an Ann Spalding is in 1841 with 3 Nichol children - the eldest Christian, is described as "Ind" - an odd "occupation" for a 14 year old: |

I think it's still a J in spite of being different from others - but don't know why that should be! Something to do with it being at the start of an abbreviation?? |
