I'm struggling to find the 1888 death for Selina that Wendy mentions, not sure if it was as Singleton or Hastilow? |

MC do you think this is the one Wendy meant as she said that she thought Selina used her middle name. I don't know why she would use Burston though as she did marry William Hastilow. The age and place are right. |

MarieCeleste - the date is from family 'knowledge' that she was registered as Jane Burston at her death (Born Selina Jane Burston and the age on the record stacks up). I need to order the cert to confirm but relatives are pretty certain. Best to be sure tho' |

Baby Joseph William died in 1883. West Bromich covers Wednesbury where they were in 1881 |

I found that earlier too - very sad but a good connection. |

I do tend to think that Mr Singleton came along before her marriage to William but like you I looked for him on the 1871 and couldn't find anyone of that name in the right area. I wonder what made Charles decide to change his name to one of a person he didn't know, or maybe he did meet him in later life. All speculation on my part |

That would fit with Emma number 2 coming along, In the 1871 census I found another daughter, Elizabeth. Born 1863. |

Also, since most of the men in our family use their middle name as their 'known as' I think it might be worth me looking for ?first name? Thomas Singleton. |
