Find Ancestors

Hi Louis is my great great grandfather and I have been looking for his ancesters for some time. I know he was private 1704 in the West Kent Militia and private 301 in the 89th regiment of foot. He died in service 20/2/1865 on the way back from Mooltan India, although I don't know where he was buried (maybe at sea). He married Sarah Jane Elwood 6/3/1856 in Castlebar Ireland and his father was given as Louis Ballati - an engraver. I have not been able to trace his parents although he may be linked to the Bellatti's of Lincoln. If anyone can help I would extremely grateful. regards AlanDevon

What proof do you have that he was born in Louth, and would that be Louth in Ireland or Lincolnshire?

The name sounds very Swiss/Italian to me?

According to familysearch.org his wife was Eliza Elwood and not Sarah Jane Elwood?

I have a copy of his attestation papers for the 89th regiment, and it says Louth Lincoln. The family thinks it has Italian ancestry but Louis is a brick wall !

thanks for the info. I am leaning towards Louis being related to the Bellatti's because the name is spelt in so may ways. I don't understand if he died in the Army why I cannot find any record of where he is buried or what happened to his possessions

While trawling Ancestry, I see there are several member trees mentioning Bellatti's in Como, Italy.
No sign of Louis, but maybe his family originated in that area?

I had hopes of this one for his father- maybe those ornate toilets could have counted as engraving?! - but it's not him.
