Fanny - my great grandmother - appears to have been born in Tattenhall, Staffs, 1868. In the 1871 census she appeared to be in the care of grandmother Sarah Timmons (56) who was also born in Tattenhall. They lived at 65 The Hill. Sarah Timmons looks to have become Sarah Law, since in 1891 she was living in Ormes Lane, Tattenhall. Fanny (then 23 and a dcressmaker) lived there along with William Morgan (my great grandfather). They were married in 1891. In 1881 I believe Fanny was in North Hill Penitentiary, Hornsey, Middlesex. She was 13. Her mother's name doesn't appear in the records. If anyone can fill in any of the obvious gaps I'd be grateful. And there are many, many other gaps to be filled. |

Unless Sarah Timmons had remarried then one of her daughters would be a Timmons who married a Shelvoke. |

I should say it is a case of the same thing that happened to one of my gt grandparents. The second name being the fathers surname and she was born out of wedlock. There is only the mothers name on the baptism which usually means she was base born. |

Thanks for all your speedy replies. What d'you reckon about the penitentiary angle? And the fact that Sarah (her grannie) changed her surname between the ages of 56 and 76? |

Thanks for that. Still trying to trace Fanny Shelvoke, who was Fanny Shelooke in the 1871 census, when she lived with just Sarah Timmins. Can't find her in the 1881 census, which makes me think I'm doing something wrong or not looking everywhere on Genes Reunited website. Shelvoke not a popular name, either. Sorry if I seem a bit of a no-hoper, but as you can tell I'm new at all this looking for ancestors lark |

1881 census. This is probably the person in North Hill you are looking for. |

That explains a lot, Pam. Thanks. Well, it explains why it's so difficult finding Shelvoke when it's spelled Shelvooke, Shelvok and now Shelford. Do you happen to know what a penitant was? I assume a waif and stray which if true is a bit odd because grannie Sarah (Timmins/Law) had her living with her when she was three and again when she was 23. That bit in between becomes something of a mystery |
